I had 2 sony ex1s
still have 3 sony f3s and 2 sony f35s

i also have a sony a7s and a samsung nx1 and 2 red one mx

As of today, I will become a blackmagic fan boi.

To all sony fans, I am sorry about this decision.

But I am putting a lot of money into the URSA Mini as the next great thing.

I tried the fs7 - I like it. I have used the sony f55 a lot.

there is some kind of beauty in the black magic sensor -

I will continue to love my f35s and f3s - but it's time to move on.

Sorry Sony, it's a whole new world.

I still love you and will remember all the wonderful times we had together.

I just pre ordered 200 of them - I'm going to film weddings in bullet time. I have a really good DIT. And he's fast. And thorough and doesn't ask questions.

is there any new footage out? i haven't seen anything other then the original vimeo clip which looked really nice and i have high hopes for the 4.6 ursa mini as well but until i get my hands on some files i won't say goodbye to anything....
i put in my order for the BM and don't expect it to ship before august (at the earliest) and actually started to wonder if sony will announce something for a fall release?

BMPCC sensor was garbage. no IR cut, hot pixels and other issue. Not sure about their other cameras but I'm a skeptic at this point.

You don't suppose that maybe the company's cheapest of the 8 cameras they offer might not be representative of the whole line?

If one is looking for a cinematic image quality - then the Blackmagic cameras deliver that better then any other camera at each price point of the various models.

I think it's a bit disingenuous when people complain about things their cameras don't come with because that implies that buyers are brand new beginners who don't yet own any video equipment. While that might be true in a few cases, I find that in reality it is extremely rare.
Like the complaining about the Ursa Mini not having built-in N.D. filters...- who that is TRULY considering buying the Ursa Mini does not already own ND filters of their preference? Sure, a few folks maybe, but the majority? I highly doubt that.

And rigging and monitors and filters - again, who doesn't already own all that besides complete beginners? I think that's a relevant question because in the vast majority of shooting scenarios all those things are generally needed anyway.

When I moved from the GH2 to the BM Cinema Camera all I needed to add was an SSD for recording media and an IR filter of the size that fits the ring size all my lenses used already.

Sure, the Production Camera and the Ursa could have benefited from a little greater dynamic range - but they still have more than a great many of the popular cameras used so successfully by members of this forum.

I agree that the Ursa Mini is going to blow everything away in its price range - by a wide margin.

And if the DVX200 ends up with good D.R. and a good codec - then these 2 cameras, for a combined total of 12 grand or less, will cover just about every professional shooting scenario a production company or artist encounters.

I've heard of similiar issues across their line of cameras (such as fixed pattern noise, noisy image, lack of IR) however, I only have direct experience with the BMPCCs. It was their cheapest because it was a their smallest sensor and lowest resolution, shouldn't have had anything to do with technical issues. Like I said, I'm a skeptic, nothing more nothing less.

Yep, another new camera with a lot of buzz around it.
A lot of people will buy it on this craze and quickly sell it realising it's not a camera for them. I've got a feeling that for anything that will need a little faster pace (live events?) it will fail miserably (because it's not meant for that purpose).
Sooo.... just wait two-three months after release! :D

I think you have them confused, the BMPCC is the Black Magic Production Cinema Camera, you're thinking of the BMPC - Black Magic Pocket Camera, no?

Edit: Or am I the confused one? Haha.
havent paid too much attention the the BM cameras. The URSA Mini is the first that I'm a bit interested in. If I was only shooting narrative stuff it would be a different thing. But as a owner/operator/one-man-band the Sony's are still more flexible for a number of different uses.

Personally I'll never understand 'fanboyism' over cameras... but to each their own!

The Ursa Mini with the 4.6k sensor certainly sounds interesting. I'll wait until I know more (does it have an OLPF, moire issues, black sun issues, how much does dynamic range drop when shooting in global shutter mode etc.) before I get too hopeful. But on the whole it's sounding very interesting. Switchable global/rolling shutter is a great idea.

I think you have them confused, the BMPCC is the Black Magic Production Cinema Camera, you're thinking of the BMPC - Black Magic Pocket Camera, no?.

Among the Blackmagic camera users the popular usage of initials is:

BMPCC = Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera
BMCC = Blackmagic Cinema Camera
BMPC = Blackmagic Production Camera (4k)

URSA Mini is basically a "95% performance for the 20% of the price" (subjective evaluation of the market sentiment) visavis F55, Varicam, Alexa and Red Dragon and, as such, should sell very well. Part of this is due to the BMD being able to find a niche that the Japanese companies has missed on (in this instance, JVC LS300 was supposed to fill it but the camera seems to be coming up short on sheer performance).

Ed,

This thread is awesome as my good friend and protege at our company just bought an URSA as I bought a FS7.

Here is the one thing I would be worried about for you (and I worry about for Blackmagic). Is their track record re: camera execution and firmware updates.

They do an amazing job at specs, price point, and design/marketing. But, when it comes down to execution their cameras always had some fatal flaws. For pocket (brother owned) it was the HDMI port/lack of proper screen + under powered batts/power solution. For the BMCC it was the power solution + form factor + lack of 60P (owned this one for almost 2 years).

On top of all that, they had some frustrating basic features missing such as clip deletion and proper audio monitoring. If one was going from BMCC to FS7 it would seem like one was going from a 76 911' with a few problems to a 2015 GT3 (a good analogy because both can be frustrating drives in certain scenarios) .

My main problem with the URSA mini, is that it hasn't shipped yet. And with every Blackmagic camera, it looks better on paper then it does out of the box (again, their track record).

This URSA mini could be the camera. It could be the one we have all been waiting for.

Until then, the FS7 is here, and now. And cheap as hell.
