Hypercardioid and shotgun mics for interviews

Hey there,

Im looking for a pair reasonably priced mics for interior interviews which can be boomed or mounted on a stand and also a general shotgun for exterior interviews and general sound.
When we rent a sound kit we are given a senni 416 which i hear isnt GREAT for interior sound, but good enough... id like to own a set of mics that are better suited for the two scenarios.

Am i right that Rode make some reasonably priced options?

Thanks for any input!

Thanks for that man,
i do use the search function often but since there has been a lot of different discussions on this kind of topic, i just felt that a new and fresh topic with maybe some more up to date opinions might be useful. :-)

Thanks

Okay, i have looked through peoples general views on this site and i have narrowed it down to the Rode NT-3, Octava MK012 and the Audio technica 4053b....

Can i get some opinions on which would be best suited in terms of budget.... the possibility of some outdoor use(with a good windshield) and also lightweight enough to be boomed.

Many thanks

Tom

Tom,

If you meant the Rode NTG-3 short shotgun & not the NT-3 cardioid, then the choice would be the NTG-3... I think it's an all-around solid, lightweight mic. If you want to use it indoors & out the pick up the Rode WS-7 windscreen (akin to the Rycote "Softie") when you need to go outside. If it gets too windy for the WS-7, then you can use the Rode Blimp (which is included in some retailers packages right now).

Sorry, i did mean the NT-3 cardioid... im looking to buy an 'indoor' mic as we always get a 416 with our rental kit anyway so i thought it would nice to own a hyper with a stand.

Thanks man

Tom.

The NT3 is a good mic, but it's big and heavy and not in any way intended for boom use.

Steve House posted a good list of hypers the other day:
AT4053b
AKGSE300/CK93
AKGC480/CK63
Sennheiser MHK50
Sennheiser MHK8050
Sanken CS3 (looks like a shotgun but is not an interference tube mic)
Neumann KM185
Schoeps CMC641
