RED camera senses microchip-like REDdots and knows exactly how far away from the focal point they are at any given time. REDdots can be discreetly placed under a collar, behind an ear in hair, etc...
RED's lens servo would react with lightning quick response time.
REDdots would simply be given numbers 1,2,3,4 and so on.
REDdots would not end the jobs of focus pullers across America, but simply refine it.
He would wirelessly follow camera around with a small switchboard-y device, maybe it has a high res screen on it as well for his viewing pleasures.
Imagine the possibilities.
Three men are running through a crowd all wearing thier REDdots, and for narrative purposes critical focus pulling is a must. The only problem is they are over budget and out of time and rehearsal time is nonexistent. With REDdots "Camera Rehearsal" would be close to eliminated.
I think of the show "24" and see these working very will on this type of fast paced handheld set.
I feel a device like REDdots would also open a new world of shots that were either avoided due to the technicallities that they posed or simply the time they ate up during camera rehearsals.
REDdots along with REDservo need no rehearsal because they are always spot on! or dot on for that matter.
If ever lost, REDdots would also have a beeper/finder function that would allow you to easily find them if dropped. GPS if cost effective.
You could have multiple "REDdots" ready for focus grab at any given time, you could also place them on anything that is stationary. They would be huge TIME SAVERS. More $$ for the story...
