Hvx200a

I was talking to my local Panasonic sales rep and he told me there is in fact NEW version of the HVX200 coming out early next year with a detacheable lens. Has anyone heard about this?

I love how local sales people are always "in the know" when it comes to what's coming out...

I once had a guy tell me (back when the first pentiums were coming out) that there would only be one more big jump. It would be a Pentium two, and then the government was going to pass a law so that consumer computers couldn't get any faster..... I guess he was trying to reassure people that their computer would last forever

If Jan's comment doesn't put this rumor to rest then nothing will. I love this forum.
All Jan said was that a new version of the HVX200 (e.g., an HVX200a) wouldn't have an interchangeable lens. Notice that she didn't say a new, sub-$10K model -- such as an HVX300 (i.e., something more than an "a" upgrade) -- with an interchangeable lens wouldn't be released.

The guy at Best Buy last week told me that the company would be carrying the HVX200, and would be selling its brand p2 cards in 32 GB capacities for $19.95.

Sounds great.

:)

Really the guy at Circuit city told me they will be carrying the RED camera... he said it was gonna cost $8999.95. Batteries extra. :)

get with it guys, I already bought my RED at Circuit City a few weeks ago. Batteries were included ;) I think that was a first week promotion though, sry :(

I'm not on here a lot, so I apologize if this has already been mentioned. I've seen a few mentions of 1080pN for multiple frame rates (plus space saving) and also frame rates higher than 60. I realize that changes cannot be made to the codec, has it been confirmed if 1080pN is not defined in the DVCPRO-HD codec?

Panasonic is known for working around existing formats and is how the legendary DVX became popular (24p stuffed into 60i DV). Now that the camera is writing to digital media and not constrained to a constant tape speed, would it be possible to simply write data in the wrong frame rate?

For example, if 1080pN isn't possible, couldn't the software simply only write 1 frame (2 1080i fields) every second to the file to give you 1fps?

If there isn't a physical limitation in the electronics or data bandwidth, couldn't 120fps be written to a 720pN60 file at twice the speed?

If you follow that, you can come up with many more useful examples and opens up a LOT of potential with modification of the software. The main disadvantage would of course be confusion, as you may need to remember these frame rates later when it comes back to editing (timecode would obviously be off). Some sort of metadata could potentially fix this. Even if the files could not be simply played back normally, they are more for creative manipulation in post.

Of course switching to a new codec would be much easier, but that is for another camera (and some software still hasn't caught up to MFX).

McSmooth:

I seriously doubt you will see Panasonic adopt such an unorthodox methodology. They are a huge manufacturer, they have to adopt things along 'officially supported" lines. You will never see Sony, Panasonic, Canon and JVC putting out none standard indie filmmaking hacks like this.

Best,

Dan

Luis, I would suggest adding to the wish list the possibility of recording avc-Intra to the P2 card- even if its only the 50mbs version.

With the introduction of the new Flash recorders that can record HD-SDI signals to 100mbs+ mpeg2 intra at 4:2:2, it seems to me it becomes mandatory that the new generation fixed lenses Pro cameras to have a high quality in camera recording codec. Not to say DVCPRO HD is a bad codec, but it certainly is inferior to the proposed by the Convergent Design's team.

Anyhow, I will certainly purchase this recorder- and if the upcoming HVX doesn't have HD-SDI outs or a similarly impressive internal recording codec, than The Canon XL-h1 and Sony XDcam EX just became much more appealing solutions...

Maybe we won't see it in a HVX200a, but on a HVX300?

Probably true, but just a thought. I'm not sure if it really is considered unorthodox though. Using 24p over 60i was a new concpet in DV and it took a few years before most software handled it properly. What made it doable was the fact that you could play it and edit it with any existing DV hardware/software in 60i mode. Comparatively, some may have considered P2 vs HDV to be more unorthadox (I personally don't, but I see the arguments).

The method I suggested allows everything to continue working in the existing codec and play on existing hardware, just not in the right speed. Any existing editor would already be able to alter this. So it would just need to be known that it was for creative purposes. To make it less confusing in-camera it could just be labeled under a slow-motion or time-lapse function with editable parameters. It probably would be less confusing than explaining to someone the first time how to turn 60i into 24p slowmo, haha (you know how often that thread pops up). Isn't this what some of those consumer cams are doing to allow for super slow mo?

I still agree that AVC-intra would make more sense, but as Jan said, it isn't going to happen... so hope for an all new model. She also mentioned asking for software changes... couldn't those simply be implemented over a firmware update?

hes talking about AVCintra 50mbps....

Wont happen. AVCintra is not for the bottom of the pile cameras. Jan has said it herself. I mean hell, its an OPTION on the 30,000$ HPX2000.....

How about a way to change the thumbnail / still image for the clip - like being able to change the thumbnail to a current frame when playing back the recorded clip - that way you can better differentiate between similar takes. Minor but useful when reviewing later.
