Hvx200a

What I don't understand is, why won't Panasonic support a 100-Mbps or even 200-Mbps intraframe AVC format?
Who says they won't? Maybe they will. The thing about P2 is that they can change things like that easily and the card will record all the formats.

All I'm saying is that they said they would do 50 megabits, but that doesn't mean it's the end of all their announcements. They certainly might choose higher-quality settings too.

Most stuff really can't be fixed with just an upgrade.

I mean, the key thing most people would like is more resolution but that's just not going to happen. It doesn't really bug me in 720 though as I've compared shots and, to my eye, I can't tell much of a sharpness difference between an XLH1, a HD100U, and a HVX200 in 720. In 1080i though the Canon definatly shows signifigantly more sharpness. It would be nice if the HVX200 could eliminate the competition in all aspects but this isn't going to happen (and I can live with sticking to 720).

Panasonic can't really easily add the ability to do interchangible lenses either (not that I really care about that).

The only things I think really should be added with an 'A' is a less noisy image (they did it with the DVX100B so they can do it here I hope) and a better LCD screen (for the life of me I don't get why the HVX200 one's are so crappy).

Better low light capability is what I would ask for. And maybe higher overcranking speed. And yes, less noise in the blacks. Some of those should be an easy upgrade, I think.

1080/24pN mode

I've read about the 1080/24pN mode on the new AJ-HPX3000G camera description on the panasonic website. That mode would be amazing on the HVX200A if it ever came out with that capability.

By my calculations, you would be able to record 40 minutes of 1080/24pN footage with 2 (16GB) P2 cards in your HVX200A.

If that happened... I know that I would be upgrading immediately. But for now, 720/24pN looks great. Alot better than the HDV sony stuff that I've seen.

Isn't the HPX3000G like $60,000 and without glass? I'd love to see an HVX-style camera with some of those features but I'm not holding my breath.

Not likely gonna happen though; 1080/24pN is only supported in the new AVC-Intra codec. And that's not going to be available in an HVX200 or future HVX200A.

Thanks, Barry. Technology just keeps getting more interesting. :)

I understand that this AVC-Intra codec (H.264-compliant) is about half the data rate of DVCProHD, but how does it really compare quality-wise?

It's not out yet so it's not been put through the tests; Panasonic claims that at 50mbps it is basically equivalent to DVCPRO-HD at 100 mbps. And that at 100mbps, it's basically equivalent to D5-HD.

The 50mbps version is 4:2:0 though, so I'm not sure I'd say it's equiv. But it is also 10-bit, so maybe what it gains in bit depth makes up for what it gives up in color space.

The 100mbps version is full-raster 1920x1080, full 4:2:2 color, and full 10-bit color depth.

What kind of quality is D5-HD in comparison to DVCproHD?

Any word on what cams are going to take advantage of 100mbps AVC?

D5-HD is Panasonic's premium format, a default mastering format for Hollywood. Sony's comparable format would be HDCAM SR.

Right now the $27,000 HPX2000/2100 can take the optional AVC-Intra card, and the $48,000 HPX3000 will have AVC-Intra built-in.

I just came across this German artikel where there is talk about the succesor the HVX210 :

Im Folgenden wollen wir diese vieldiskutierte Kamera ein wenig genauer betrachten und sie auf ihre Leistungsfähigkeit hin abklopfen. Da sich die HVX200 dieses Jahr dem Ende ihres Produkt-Zyklus nähert und der Nachfolger HVX210 bereits in den Startlöchern steht ... mehr dazu weiter unten .., also auch höchste Zeit.

http://www.slashcam.de/artikel/Test/Panasonic-HVX200.html#T3

In the same article the following is stated by Panasonic !!!!! :

again from same article :

Da wir gerade beim Thema "anschließen" sind: Unbestätigten Gerüchten zur Folge soll die nächste Version der HVX 200, die HVX 210 über einen SDI-Out verfügen. Wer also nicht ohne hochwertiges, unkomprimiertes SDI-Signal leben kann, sollte sich noch bis Ende des Jahres gedulden, dann wissen wir mehr.

The only part of that article that mentions anything confirmed is the mention of a revised menu system in the next iteration of the HVX. Otherwise, it seems like speculation. So it's basically an unconfirmed rumor at this point. Who did they talk to--a distributor or sales rep that was speculating? They don't quote a reliable source, so i wouldn't get too excited yet. It may turn out to be true, but this isn't anything close to a confirmation

Appreciate the info, Barry. That clarifies a lot.

Sounds like AVC-Intra will be a great codec. I think the 100mbps version will be the way to go. I would love to see something like that in an HVX200 successor. Seems unlikely though. However, Panasonic has really blown away my feature expectations over the last 5 years or so with the introduction of the DVX (24P) and HVX (DVCProHD) at incredibly affordable price points. So ya never know . . .

The Successor to the 200 is the 500. It is a sweet successor. Im not sure Panasonic is interested in stacking all the latest and greatest technology in the handicam form factor camera. The more cameras that are introduced above it, the less well it will stack up to them. Thats just the way it is. You can look for the evolution of the HVX to be a bridge from consumer cameras to Professional cameras. Just the first pro-sumer step. I know in my professional world the HVX is falling from grace quickly, with the introduction of the 500 and 2000, everyone wants to shoot with those, so Im going to be moving up very soon.

Nevertheless I have the feeling that in the first quarter of 2008 there will be an official announcement by Panasonic. This is in line what Jan C.L. always told that before 2008 there will not be a successor of the HVX200. Maybe they planned it late 2008 but the technolgy goes so fast that theyhave to reschedule their their original roadmap and the HVX200a/HVX210 will be there in spring 2008.

Fortunately my experience in the p2 work flow with the HVX translates into demand for my knowledge in shooting the new P2 cameras. I have to say after shooting with both the 500 and the 2000 the 2/3 chip is more important than I had expected it to be.
That said, I love my HVX, and it will be a great camera for a long time.
