Hvx200a

I ran the article through Babel Fish and here are the key sections:

There the HVX200 this year the end of their product cycle approaches and the successor HVX210 already in the starting holes stands... more to it further down., thus also highest time. Unfortunately the pro Cams of Panasonic was not to date gesegnet with the best press Review availability - this changes from now on hopefully...

There we straight with the topic "attach" are: Unconfirmed rumors to the consequence is the next version of the HVX 200, which have HVX 210 a SDI Out. Who cannot live thus without high-quality, unkomprimiertes SDI signal, should wait still to end of the yearly, then we know more. ...

Now, a word of warning, the key works are: Unconfirmed rumors.

While it's possible, I wouldn't put a bet on it.

Guys,

Trying to second guess this is not of useful effort. Just talk about what features you want and we will try to include, it is a good ways off Please don't say 2/3" ccds, or DVCPRO tape drive, look at it with the eyes that it has to come out at the same price.

Thanks,

Jan

......... look at it with the eyes that it has to come out at the same price.
In which case shoudermount form factor would have to be top of my list (I can't see that would cause much price difference (?) ) - assuming size and weight is likely to remain roughly the same.

The upcoming Sony EX looks to have some very nice paper specs, but I can't see it being at all pleasant ergonomically for handheld use - shouldermount styling an HVX200 replacement would be a chance to gain an undeniable advantage on Sony in this market sector. Whilst I generally like the JVC 251 styling, I'm not sure that interchangeable lenses are really value for money at this price. Compared to that camera, maybe better to have a fixed lens with true manual controls (as the EX), whilst keeping the wide angle coverage of the current HVX200 lens.

We can dream :)

Glad that over the fence you're, as always, listening to us. This makes me confident that, again, Panasonic will come up with the camera to beat in the price range...

Jan, hope you took notes of my suggestions... :)

This would be a huge expense actually as the entire product would have to go through a redesign.

Sorry,

Jan

this is what i want:

-is it possible to make it so we can use 35mm lenses w/o an adapter?

-bigger LCD

-60p in SD? is that possible?

-focus assist in SD (is there any better auto-focus? or is that as good as it can be?)

-the ability to rack focus with the remote control? like from one focus number to another at a variable speed?

-one more ND filter thats darker

-have it say the frame rate on the display

-make more p2 cards. lots more. (and make em cheaper)

Things I would like to see (no idea how difficult these are, just throwing them out there):

1. White balance settings and reading in degrees kelvin.
Giving you the ability to 'dial in' the temp that you need - or the ability to tweak up or down in degrees as opposed to the "-5 to +5" scale.

2. 6 PIN as opposed to 4 PIN Firewire port.
If that is not possible, then some way to fortify that connection needs to be found.
Maybe making the 1394 port recessed in some way? Not sure what the best solution is, but this is definitely a weak point on the camera right now.

3. The ability to input more than two audio sources
It's frustrating to know that we're using codecs that support 4 channels of audio only to record 2 channels of camera mic sound. My first step in editing is generally to go through and delete the camera audio. Being able to run 4 mics into the camera (somehow) would be fantastic. Right now it feels like we can't fully exploit the DVCProHD codec.

4. Focus readings in Feet and Inches
The focus readings now are great, don't get me wrong.
But the ability to have Feet and Inches would be a step up (in my opinion) from having only feet in decimals.

5. The ability to save ALL camera information on the SD card in one file
At the moment we can save Scene files, and we can save User files.
It would be nice to be able to save 1 file that when loaded up would not only set up the scene file correctly, but the recording settings, display, etc etc. Not sure if that's possible, but it would be nice when renting a second camera to be able to set it up identically in one fell swoop.

6. Recording of Scene File and User File settings in the metadata
I found myself in the situation earlier this year where I had forgotten to save my scene file settings and had to reshoot some footage. I went back to the MXF files thinking maybe there was a way to pull up the scene file information from the metadata. If possible, I think this would be a great thing to add. That way not only is all your scene file information saved, but its saved IN your footage. As long as you have your P2 files you will always have the scene file info used to shoot it.

7. Higher res LCD Screen?
I put a question mark on this one because I understand the expense involved.
If at all possible, it would be a lifesaver. BUT, on the other hand - if due to expense it can't be high res enough to make a major difference in the ability to use the LCD to focus then, in my opinion, its not worth upgrading.

8. Built in Waveform or Histogram
Okay, this one is probably just a dream, but I'm throwing it out there.

These are just off the top of my head...I'm sure there will be more.
:)

audio: 4 channels external input

audio: 4 channels external input

Best; 4 xlr inputs
Next best: 2 xlr's and the ability to feed the other two line in via the phonos

1) The ability to move the focus assist box into different quadrants on the LCD
2) The ability to lock the focus ring
3) ability to turn off the internal mic and use all 4 channels to record with external mics.
4) 6 pin firewire
5) upgraded LCD

Hi there,

my BIGGEST DREAM and only thing I would like to add on my HVX200e is to be able to, here in PAL country (South Africa) also have the famous --- 24fps --- recording available.
PLEASE SANTA (aka. Jan_Crittenden, :-) ), O PLEASE CAN WE HAVE THAT, WE'VE ALL BEEN GOOD THIS YEAR, PROMISE !!!

And also the bigger Firewire on camera would be nice.

other than those two things I think the camera is worth every cent!

thanks,
Derrick

Sorry - I thought that was what we were referring to - sort of as the EX is to the Z1. The successor to the HVX rather than an upgrade.

Ah well. I hope you've filed it away for when a full redesign does take place! :)

No redesign? ok:

1- screen grabs to sd card
2- Camera tape drive recording AVCHD at acceptable bit rate
3- tape drive to record 50p also
4-1/2 ccd's (one can try :) )
5- PN recording for 1080p mode
6- SD card recording of proxy footage
7- Higher resolution LCD with Flip.
8-Ntsc and pal compatible. Everyone else is doing it, so why can't we?
9-Black, sexier casing (looks matter- the fat Matilda needs a sexy dress, if you know what I mean)

Hi Jan,

If or when the next version of the HVX-200 comes out, I'll like to see the DV Tape go away. I'm not sure how others feel about this, but given that 16GB P2 cards exist, why bother with tape? OK, the cost savings isn't great, but it would allow some savings to put the money into some other feature.

The only thing that someone else hasn't said, that I'd like, is to allow the user to change the HD source to SD output as 3 possible choices:

Squeeze the 16:9 into 4:3 (Currently being done)
Crop the 16:9 into 4:3 (loose the left/right edges, but fill the vertical)
Letterbox the 16:9 into 4:3

About the only reason for this is when one has to show the video on a SD monitor.

Best Wishes,

Bob Diaz

I think the DV tape is very important because it makes it easier to transition from SD to HD. A lot of people are upgrading from the DVX and buy the HVX before they have the money or the hardware to go HD. Then they're free to make the switch when they are able.

I like a few of these ideas...but what about current HVX users?

Some ideas that Luis had were great. A few were software related so maybe a software update that can have current users run as current to the newer model cameras?

such as:

1. White balance settings and reading in degrees kelvin.
Giving you the ability to 'dial in' the temp that you need - or the ability to tweak up or down in degrees as opposed to the "-5 to +5" scale.

4. Focus readings in Feet and Inches

Don't get me wrong, I think the HVX200 is a great camera but I think it needs a few things done to it, not big things I don't think, but here we go:

1. Higher resolution CCD's. The current CCD's are holding the camera back in terms of sharpness compared to the competition, yes it is to the user's taste, but with cameras coming out with true 1920x1080 CCD's (rather 1440x1080 effective) with 24p at that, the CCD's at least have to be bumped up to 1280x720.

2. Variable frame rates in 1080 modes. Would be a nice touch but I could see how this would hurt the upper division cameras' sales.

3. AVC-Intra codec support. A no-brainer for those needing long recording times.

4. Higher resolution LCD with markers for various aspect ratios. If I could frame 2.35:1 with the HVX200 without resorting to taping my LCD or wrapping it with rubber bands, I'd always have it at that setting.

5. More variable frame rates. If users can hack the camera to do it, why can't we just get them natively?

6. HDMI out. Obvious extra.

7. Flip function for 35mm adapters. Might as well if a new LCD is going to be put in anyway.

8. Extra P2 slots anyone? This would be gravy but there's bound to be people still complaining about recording times, blah, blah, blah. :)

Granted I don't own an HVX200 myself but I've played with it several times at NAB, stores, and during some class projects. Great camera.

3. AVC-Intra codec support. A no-brainer for those needing long recording times.

From what i've read, the current computer board that the camera needs for the intra codec is physically to large to fit into a handheld camera.. however not to say that in a few years that will change.

I'd like to see,

Higher res LCD and viewfinder,

Higher res 1/3" CCDs,

More frame rates at 720, like someone said above, if we can hack them with a scene file.. then why not have them there in the menu.

NTSC/PAL switchable. - this is a big one for me, it might not happen so much in the NTSC countires but down here in PAL land we get asked for NTSC stuff quite a bit.

As much as i loved my Z1 for that.. i have since sold it and am currently sitting on the fence waiting to see where Panasonic are going, im not holding my breath however.. i currently have no use for a handheld camera so im fine with waiting.

Keep the tape drive, its handy as hell to still give a client a tape or dump HD to tape when you havent got the p2 card space. But im sure it'll stay in there as taking it out would requrie a total redesign..

Ok...so who is the official scribe for the user group?

Maybe the list should be divided into two:

1. ideas for future hardware

2. ideas that can potentially be implemented on the current HVX200 platform via software updates.

Then we can start priortizing our wish list(s) for Jan.

Any takers?
