HVX200A vs. EX-1

Yup, Vimeo has a LOT of EX1 clips. Overall, these clips look VERY good! For example, the "on safari with EX1" clip has some nice production quality and good IQ. However, the fast pans toward the end of the clip might illustrate the codec limitations. Tough call as a pan across grass is about as tough as it gets for digital video.

I just viewed that clip again looking for "odd" visuals in the pans. I understand the whole rolling shutter thing and have seen worse examples of it.

My position on this is:

- If my viewer didn't like my film because of that...... I failed in other ways!
- If I shot dog, horse, car, human, motorcycle racing I would choose a differant camera.

I think I'm gonna call in both cameras to my Studio to do a hands on test.

Great idea! Get your actual hands on one. Maybe you'll hate it, maybe you won't. However, I think I am going to go shoot some horses and cars over the next week or so and upload footage. No color correction or grading, with metadata laid on the track like I always do.

That would be great! I would love to see your tests!

No color correction, no grading, no filtering of ANY kind. Just *DEAD ACCURATE* color rendition on the skin tone. And on African American skin at that so you can see into the shadows, the pores, the razor stubble, everything. It's a 1 light shoot so you can see the light falloff across the face.

You may want to download the actual .mp4 file because the online flash rendition might not be clean enough.

Enjoy.

Can you post where you are seeing better imagery? The stuff I've seen by Philip Bloom and others while admirably sharp leaves me unconvinced that the camera is capable of doing subtle, silky colors. I have yet to see pleasant, realistic skin tones from an EX1, for instance. Link for an instance of good skin tones, if you have one, I'd be very curious. I'm not saying the EX1 cannot handle this, just that I haven't seen it do so yet.

You see. I'm personally a camera/toy junkie and I like whatever serves my purposes. One guy said it best, if you don't have too much invested in P2 then this camera or anything else is viable 2nd camera.

Its not like the DV years that took a decade to run it's course. HD is moving so rapidly and increasingly smaller form factor and also cost. It's good for all of us

It's still building the flash version for Vimeo, but download the real mp4 and enjoy/examine.

I've been watching the original MP4 and it was pretty impressive to see. The camera itself is great and there are no situations, where the CMOS glitches would be obvious, but the codec issues are pretty intense... and good to see in that video.

E.g. in frame 9697 (Pan Test @ 1/2000) - maaaan, look at that distorsion, that is reaaaaly evil. Or at frame 6050, where the codec needs 3 frames to restore the Bit Rate and deliver full sharpness.... Thank you for the tests, they really encouraged me not to use a Long-GOP format to capture my footage....

My goal is to show the real deal. Whether that's favorable to the EX1 or not. I suppose unlike most people, I don't worry about the long GOP structure because I intend to use HD-SDI for any critical applications.

I need to get an HVX and my DVX and repeat these tests.

Looks fine to me! (I still wish I could see a side-by-side comparison with the HVX…) It's almost TOO sharp, hyper-real. What do you do to lessen extraneous skin imperfections in post? I'm curious. Simply blurring the image won't work, obviously.

I definitely think the EX1 competes well with the HVX200a. There's no shame in owning either camera.

Well,

The EX1 has an incredible amount of adjustment available in camera. So I could soften the image as it's being captured if I wanted. I could add noise in the camera with gain, I could use filtration like a black pro-mist, etc. In post I could use Magic Bullet to get a lot of the same things though it's slightly different.

What I think is kind of funny is how people have gotten so used to non-sharp images that the presentation of a fairly sharp image seems out of place. Film is VERY sharp. But with the filtration on the lenses, 2k scanning for DI, and three generations of copying by the time it reaches the local theatre, a lot of that edge is knocked off.

In my tests the 200A appears to be sharper than the 200. I don't think that's due to an increase in resolution but rather the better CCD and signal processor. The image is a lot less muddy than before and looks sharper as a result.
