HVX200a never existed?!

Okay, I'm official confused. I've been trying to find somewhere that will sell me an AG-HVX200A for about a week now, and all the suppliers I contact either don't sell it or tell me "we've never heard of that model. It doesn't exist. We have the HVX201AE and before that there was the HVX200E".

So I'm confused. I was of the understanding that the HVX200E was a 1st generation model. I was of the understanding that the HVX200A is the 2nd generation model, with better light sensitivity and lower noise. Both models go up to 60p.

Now I'm being told that the HVX200A never existed, and Panasonic made the HVX200E and then the HVX201AE. I'm being told that the HVX201AE does not go up to 60p, but a mere 50p, which is a DOWNGRADE from the previous HVX200E model.

I need a 2nd gen HVX with the improved light and low noise, and 60p (i.e. the 200A), but I'm being told by many suppliers that this never existed? I could have sworn I've seen plenty of posts from people on these forums stating that they own a 200A.

Can anyone sensible shed some light on whats going on?! :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

You have not gone cukoo .
This is the case of PAL version vs NTSC version which is the 200a: tape and p2 and 720/60p.
I take it your not on the new world.

Ah thank you! :dankk2:

Interesting, and odd. So am I to understand that panasonic made the NTSC version called "200a" and up to 60p yet they made the PAL version called "201AE" and up to 50p?:huh:

This is the first time I read that you're in UK - your location isn't in your profile. How does VAT work if you import a camera from an NTSC country?

I get hit with VAT and import duties, it will almost double the cost.

Is there any advantage of getting the 200A NTSC instead of the 201AE PAL?

I notice on the official website, it states: "There are two versions of [the 201AE] ; one to support the NTSC market, and one to support the PAL market. "

What is the PAL alternative for the 200a with 60p? :huh:

yes because Pal is 50i/ 25 frames/sec and pana gave it 50p sweetness. If your doing a pal project 50p would be sufficient.

The new hpx170 is a whole other story which I will not even begin to start ranting here read the posts on the frontpage.:)

My projects will be pitched to UK channels that use PAL, but I would need 24p for film-look projects, and 60p for slo-mo effects for some music vids, so 25p and 50p wouldn't cut it. The 201AE doesn't seem to have 24p or 60p yet they market it as a replacement for the HVX200. It doesn't seem to cut it for my projects.

What problems would I face when pitching to PAL channels, if I bought and used a NTSC 200A from the US? :huh: I would want to be filming in 24p, 60p, and perhaps sometimes 25p for documentaries.

50p on a 25 fps timeline should.
Its the same effect as 60p on a 30 fps timeline.

You could always get the HPX-170 and pay for the extra NTSC/PAL switching ability. That should give you what you need (provided you don't need to shoot to tape at all).

The PAL HVX was always 50p (new A version and the old one), the NTSC HVX was always 60p (new and old version of it). If you produce for the UK market I would strongly advise you to get a PAL HVX. The difference between 24p and 25p is so minor that you won't notice. If you shoot for TV in 24p, they will speed it up to 25p for broadcasting, in other words it doesn't make sense to shoot in 24p. The only advantage that the NTSC version has is the higher top frame rate. On the other hand side, the PAL HVX will record in slightly higher resolution...

ntsc=24p, 60p
pal=25p, 50p

if your trying to give this to a uk television chanel im pretty sure you need pal unless your doing stuff for the web. the station would have to have ntsc equipment

there is very little difference from 24p to 25p by 1fps.

there is a LOT more to the film look.

In fact, many films in Europe are shot at 25p to ease compatibility with video.

It's said that the european version of the new HPX170 cam will have the pal/ntsc switchablilty.So you get all the frames.
But we will just have to wait and see if this is true when the cam comes ?

And I do not know when the release date is for either versions !
