HVX200 zoom noise

Is it just my HVX200 or does the zoom servo make noticeable noise when zooming quickly? If I go slow it's quiet... but with anything faster I can really hear it. It doesn't appear to be picked up on the mic, so it doesn't seem serious, but just curious if anyone else has this?

one of the reasons I bought this camera is because of the ability to do manual zoom, but yes it does seem to have a noisy zoom

Samething here, so it must be 'normal'
Im having problem with the focus... I find it slow to auto-focus, take several seconds and even then, it keep loosing it focus to get it back again indefinitly :(

Depends on your frame rate. The slower your frame rate, the slower and less reliable autofocus will be. 24fps autofocus isn't so good. Try it in 60p/60i and you should see much improvement -- faster frame rate = better performance.

Ha interesting. I shooted yesterday at 480i 30p and it was very annoying. I beleived it was the cold weather that caused my auto focus to be slow.

Barry:

Will the manual method of focussing - zooming in, focussing, zooming out to compose - work on the HVX?

My understanding is that in some lens designs, the focus will drift when the zoom is used.

Thanks.

I'd like to know as well.

Thanks.

Did anybody notice than when in Manual Zoom, operating the zoom rocker STILL activates the zoom servo? You can hear it working inside the camera, even though there's no zooming going on. Is this a bug? Will it eventually damage the motor?

Nope, basicly the switch in the front just remove the gear from the motor. So using the zoom rocker will just make that motor turn and wont cause damage since the motor have no resistance. I might even think that it detect this lack of resistance and the motor stop after 1 or 2 seconds (I think it more than if you zoom using the rocker but the actual indicator in the view finder doesn't change, it might be because you are forcing it, so the motor shutdown so it do not get broken.

Good answer ? ;)

Yeah, just as on the DVX100. The lens will hold focus after you focus at full telephoto and then zoom out.

My camera's (HVX200 serial number A******) is completely quiet. My first one however (B******) was more comparible to the DVX series zoom noise, not loud, but just enough to hear.

Yeah, the B was the beneficiary of HVX improvements--the tape transport system being the other obvious example. I'm sure the HVX made the B a reasonable product offering for Pany.

I find the zoom noise a bit loud, but for most things (that matter) I'll be using an external mic.

Tape transport improvment? How so?

I have not noticed any improvments with the b******** compared to the a********.

Mine is in the shop.

Mine is in the shop.

My zoom was so loud I brought it back two days after I took delivery of the dern thing.
It's at Panasonic now and should be back by this Monday. I took it in to the reputable shop I bought it from and since the HVX is so new, the tech there had no idea what was normal. We compared it to rental unit they had there (the serial numbers were about 150 numbers apart and started with the same letter) and the rental was noticably more quiet. Instead of sending to a local Panasonic warranty repair shop which is usually the case, Panasonic wanted to get the camera themselves to take a look, again, since the camera is so new. The Panasonic tech told my dealer, "this is no problem, 2-3 days max". We'll see what it comes back sounding like and what exactly they 'fixed'. Do your cameras sound like the servo is a little taxed? Mine made a whining noise, like it was weak and struggling pushing/pulling the lens through the barrel. Plus the zoom is slow, slower than most little camera's I've worked with, but maybe my busted motor is just that, busted. Right out of the box. I'll keep you updated as to how it comes back next week.

Ouch, Jeremy. That doesn't sound good. Go to your happy place.

For tape transport changes, here's a quotation from Jarred's review:

Tape Transport: The transport has been completely beefed up.. it now is much more secure and handles the strain the camera weight put on the door via the handstrap. With the transport upgrade however, the 100B loses the “interval rec” feature. You can still do one-shot recording, but the camera doesn’t have an intervalometer to automatically re-trigger one-shot recording.

I have an A serial number and the zoom noise is so loud that if you really needed that audio while zooming it would be unusable.
How would they fix that? Maybe a little screening device under the mic would work? I am going to slap my shotgun on and see if it makes a diff.

I have the same problem, I beleived that the low whining of people in my post in the hard ware section mean it was normal. Let us know what happened

This is a "B" HVX and it's noisy too... Might need to go in?

No no, im talking about teh HVX200 not the DVX100B. I have had 2 HVX units and my current on has a very quiet zoom.
