ill be recording a live event this weekend and would like to know what program i would need to just take video from my cards ( camera ) to import to hard drive using laptop pc and then after day is done the files imported to external hard drive to use in my final cut pro .. i only have a 32gb and 16gb card so will be there for about 12 hours ...
also can dvx100b be used a a second cam then up rez the footage from it look some what decent. won't be using much from dvx100 but maybe can get that one shot i missed .. please doing on saturday need feed back thanks .. ill post footage when done

there is no "program" needed to transfer P2 content to a laptop/hard drive. all you need is a laptop with a pcmcia slot (or one of the variety adapter options out there) and make sure youve downloaded the right panasonic drivers. there ARE programs you can use (p2log, shotput, p2cms, etc) but you dont NEED them, you can do simple drag and drop transfers. but some people do prefer the variety of features provided by some of the applications mentioned in this discussion...

you have mismatched cards. so youre going to have to be careful to only fill about half your 32gig card before you yank it and begin shooting to your 16 gig. reason i suggest this is that the 32 gig will take longer to transfer than it will to fill the 16gig. if you fill the 32gig then shoot to the 16, you WILL at some point have one full card and one card still transferring.

if this is why you want to roll with your dvx, that would give you coverage. and yes, you CAN upres dvx footage - to a degree. but id suggest just renting another 32 gig card. for $50 you'll save yourself a world of hassle and worry.

my workflow is a Dell laptop with a Duel Adaptor to dump the cards to an external USB passport type drive. I use P2CMS to verfify the transfered footage, then re-format the card and reuse it. It is recommended to only format the card with the camera.

If you're transferring with a PC to external drive, I highly recommend P2Genie for automation of the processes. It transfers to one or two destinations and allows for naming the files and advances the roll numbers automatically.

We've used this for hundreds of transfers and never lost a frame.

ok so I have a laptop with pcmia slot are you telling me that the P2 cards are pcmia slots cards?

ok thanks everyone one last question , when i install in my laptop shows all the files in different folders .. there not saved a a movie file that i can play . someone mentioned installing a viewer but when i transfer to the hard drive it will be in that format .. will fcp pick it up . or which files do i transfer to the drive ? thanks again everyone ..

Do not for any reason mess with those files. In each p2 card you offload you will have a contents folder and a lastclip.txt file.

The simple method is to create a folder like (change name to suit your needs) beachshootcard01 and drop the contents folder and lastclip.txt in there.

If you want to view what you have shot download p2 viewer from here --- http://pro-av.panasonic.net/en/sales_o/p2/p2viewer/index.html

To FCP - move all those folders you made to your edit / scratch disc. In FCP go file>log and transfer - point it to the folder and there you go.

For HVX200 (DVCProHD) projects, you'll want to download and install these utilities for the PC:

(WIN) P2 Driver Software
(WIN) P2 Contents Manager Software

Install these utilities for the Mac:

(Mac) P2 Driver and Card Formatter software
(Mac) P2 Contents Management Software

What Noel is saying is the reason I suggested P2Genie as an inexpensive transfer utility that will help you keep your process uncluttered and virtually risk-free. As you become adept at managing the data, you might feel comfortable abandoning P2Genie. We use it on multi-cam shoots will synchronized timecode - and if it'll work there...

Paramount rules for successful P2 data management:
  1. Do not ever separate the CONTENTS folder from the associated Lastclip.txt document
  2. Never relocate any of the CONTENTS folder subfolders out of the CONTENTS folder

It looks like this in use:

picture.php

So, basically, you open this application and type in the project name (e.g., dboone_doc_ky_7jun09). In our case, we never change the title, "dboone_doc", but things like location, "ky" (Kentucky) and the day of days / date is changed accordingly.

This is used for one day only and now all of your CONTENTS and Lastclip.txt folders will automatically go into folders with that day's project name, but with a new REEL number for each card you transfer. That part is automatic and you can keep cumulative reel numbers no matter how you name the day or are structuring your film breaks.

We lock the cards during transfers, so the ERASE AFTER B/U function is moot. 2'ND DESTINATION is only enabled when you have two drives hooked-up. The program will throw an error if you don't have one (or more) of your selected drives connected to the transfer PC.

as i recall, installing p2cms on a mac will allow you to open mxf clips within the video folder. which resides in the contents folder - using quicktime player

... and never rename the CONTENTS folder (or any of its subfolders!) If you want to differentiate different CONTENTS folders, put them in their own directories (i.e., DAY1/CONTENTS or DAY2/CONTENTS) but do not do not do not rename CONTENTS to be CONTENTS1 or anything like that!

Yep, P2CMS installs an MXF-reading plug-in to Quicktime. Unfortunately it doesn't know to go find the audio files and link them together, so you'll probably get the video but only the video... at least, when using it in the NLE; I'm not sure about when using it in the Quicktime player itself.

that is correct. after installing p2cms on a mac, when you click an mxf file in the finder, it simply opens up the video file (no audio) in quicktime player. it has no effect (positive or negative) on how your NLE (in this case FCP) functions

ok thanks guys gonna be interesting shoot thanks for the info .. Ive been invited to a VIP recording for Jimmy james band doing a Live Cd recording so im gonna do some practice video and maybe a short clip .. this is all for fun ... done in a recording studio first time ever very excited as can be ... as for cameras hvx200 and was hoping for feedback also on the dvx100b for b camera and up rez think this will be a good thing or no.

Try and get all the live audio recorded to a separate hard disk recorder and be sure to slate somehow if you can. Sounds fun.
