hvx200 or hmc150 for beginner

I plan on filming skateboarding this summer. I have an HVX200 but never used it before, its just sitting brand new in a box. I have no camera knowledge except what I am researching now & I would like to start filming soon. The HVX has tons of features I know nothing about & i dont understand how to upload P2 cards. the HMC150 looks like a higher quality simplified version without all the features. should i look at getting one of those instead? all i want to get is a fisheye for now until i learn how to use it better.

the 200 does not do as well in low light as the 150. Unless you have a 200A. if you have a 200A is the same. The 200 uses the more popular dvcprohd codec. It can record to mini dv tape fo sd production. (unlike the 150) P2 is more reliable then the sd cards for the 150. There are pro's and cons to oth cameras, but if you already have a 200 its not to hard to learn how to use. Get a copy of barry's HVX Book and you will be taping like a pro in no time.

zachm, where you located? I'm in Toronto suburb areas, maybe we can meet up and I can show you how to get the most from your HVX200, maybe even shoot together.... I could use some stock footage and it sounds cool.

I own both HVX200 (for sale at the moment) and HPX170. I do more 35mm adapater work so I wanted lower light capability and less weight of the HPX170. If you are shooting outdoor (skateboard film you said) then dont worry about lower light capabilities of the HMC150 in my opinon.

The codec on the HVX200 is "better".

Sell the HVX 200 and buy an HPX 170.
Perfectly balanced for the kind of hand held shooting you will likely be doing a lot of.

Rather than buying a new camera and possibly wasting $$$, try learning how to use your HVX200. You can shoot to tape or P2 card with your HVX. Start by reading and really understanding the manual. Practice using the controls. Once you learn how to change exposure and get good focus its time to try it out. Practice, Practice Practice. Getting another camera is NOT going to make you a better film maker.

+1 And, the DVCProHD codec on the HVX is better suited to action than the HMC150 using AVCHD. If you don't have any P2 media, you can start off shooting standard def to tape in 16x9 format.

You realize used 200 retail for 1800-2200 ish and the 170 hasn't been out long enough to have low prices. Used it generally around 3000. If he doesnt need the low light, the 200 and 170 are functionaly the same except the 200 ads the dv deck. There is nothing wrong with the 200 and really no reason to upgrade to the 170 unless weight or low light is a huge concern.
