Sure we have been amazed and mesmerized by the specs-getting all the gooddies as the big boys HD Varicam and Alta, and getting more for the money like SD as well as HD all in one package all for $6,000.00.

Can a company like Panasonic really offer everything, good things in one little package? Is there a draw back or a catch? Can we apply that saying that "you get what you paid for"?

Is't really that it's going to be a breakthrough camera? Can this be the camera that's going to revolutionize little filmmakers like us? Let's pray it's not like what JVC did with their HDV cams or even Sony HDV.

sorry for my bad grammer.

Yes. In many ways. It isn't the first giant leap in video, and most certainly won't be the last. A significant leap for those that want or can use a camera like this.

My best effort at rhetoric.

Yes I think that the HVX will be a revolutionary camera, for a certain market segment, the independent low budget filmmaker.

The only "catch" is that it is still a 1/3" camera with a pro-sumer fixed lens. I believe that it will be a very good camera, but we must beware of unrealistic expectations. Even though it shoots DVC-PRO HD and has the capability to shoot 1080 24p, it is not a substitute for a Varicam or Cine Alta, in most applications.

That being said, I can't wait for the mutha to come out......

Probably more evolutionary than revolutionary, but very well targeted toward its intended user.

For the price, the HVX seems to be an incredible value. Certainly, Panasonic must be assuming that this camera will sell in considerable volume and that the economy of scale will pay off what is likely to have been a very considerable development effort.

I too can't wait to get one.

I'm praying and saving up. 4banks 4FT Kinoflo, 2 single Kino, Cavision Matte, my old but good photo tripod, G4 w/FCP 4.5, 4 HD drives, and let's hope HVX200 goes well and beautifully with the package!
lets hope for the best I guess since it's the only one of a kind camera.

Should shoot the price of P2 cards out of the sky... hopefully. I just hope they can get P2 cards in higher capacity out sooner than the current layout reports, it'd make things a lot simpler than me having to drag my laptop and all those extra batteries and external hard drives around all over the place!

I think that the catch is the P2 cards...but this is not such a bad thing really.

To shoot HD "in camera" you are really looking at a $10K camera.

But I think that Pany are giving us so many goodies as a way to sell not just P2 cards, but "the idea of P2 cards." A lot of upcoming professionals and future pros will be cutting their teeth on this camera, and if they get used to a P2 workflow it will become the future and Pany will make loadsa cash.

This is good for us though, kinda a win-win situation - we get a decent camera and Pany ween filmmakers into P2. They could sell the HVX at a $1000 loss and it would still be a wise product for the company to produce.

That is just my theory, but I am sure Pany will also make plenty of money on the camera itself. It is just a shame the cards are so expensive!

I'm kinda concerned on the built quality, the material that's inside the camera. You know like a department store video tripod versus a Matthew. Maybe i'm thinking too much. well, let's wait.

Yeah, that stuff will be a real short-run pain. The 32 GB cards should be out around mid-2007. Two of those should give an hour of continuous recording in 1080, for us docu types. Thank God my magnum opus will be still quite underfunded until then!!

If the DVX is any indication...the HVX will rock! I'd like to see that the on camera monitor has flip ability. As for P2 cards...well, there will be a few options available when the cam comes out. I'm opting for a Laird or direct to laptop capture at the outset of cam release.

I dunno, I guess we might get what we pay for...

I distinctly remember reading somewhere the chips are 1 megapixel each (although I don't have that confirmed officially) - and then, well, everything above 720p will be artificial. It might be a JVC HD100 without interchangable lens then, but with "uprezzing feature" (kinda like the digital zoom on consumer camcorders....)

We'll have to wait and see.

Sony made somthing. JVC did it better (for two grand extra). Now if the panny'll be the same price... I guess the three major players (JVC, Panasonic, Sony) can do about the same for the same money....

Judging by the DVX... same price-class of the XL1s... about the same quality
I don't see why it will be different, but we can surely hope....

There's never been anything official from Panasonic that said anything of the sort. What there was, was one guy going around on DVInfo and DV.com spreading the same rumors everywhere -- he's the same guy who posts as Joseph George, Ultra Definition, PeteWright, Jimmy, HDProductions, and probably dozens of other aliases. He committed this latest public-relations blitz under the false ID of "Radek Svoboda".

There has never been any confirmation about pixel dimensions, so anybody guessing 1 megapixel is doing exactly that -- guessing.

There has never been any indication, not a shred of evidence, not any reason whatsoever for anyone to think that there's any bogus "uprezzing" going on. What we have been told is that it's a "native high-def chipset". That's all we've been told. That, and "wait until you see the footage". Between those two, that's all we know about the chip (well, we also know that there are three of them, and that they're CCDs).

I beg to differ. The DVX produces image quality superior to the XL1s any day. Maybe what you meant was that the DVX is more comparable to the XL2?

No, I'm sorry...

I can see you can find the DVX better than the XL1s, but the XL2 is another league: it's a native 16/9 camcorder for crying out loud.... and, way more recent than DVX.

I've used the DVX and XL2 together a number of times on a multi-camcorder-set-up. Trust me, in 16/9 (and who shoots 4/3 anymore?) the DVX gets eaten alive by the XL2...

I'm not saying the DVX is a bad camcorder package. It's just not in the same league as an XL2 (4/3 vs. 16/9 cam...)

Okay, Barry, as I said, I remembered I read it, I just didn't know where, but I wasn't sure how much truth there was to it...

But Barry, where do you think they made the compromises, to make this caamcorder in the $6000 price range?

Don't know. We'll see. I mean, Sony's putting out "HD" camcorders for $1600, so technically $6,000 is a *lot* of budget, when you compare it to the cost of an HC1.

On paper the HVX looks fantastic. On paper it should literally blow the competition into the weeds. We're talking about 1080/24p that offers 50% more resolution and three times as much chroma res as the JVC, or double the vertical resolution and 78% more chroma than a Z1 shooting in CF25 -- there's just no contest. But that's on paper. And we don't shoot on paper; so we'll have to really put it to the test.

Two compromises are 1) the inability to exchange the lens, and 2) just the fact that it has 1/3" CCDs. JVC and Panasonic have both put out 1/2" camcorders that cost less than this 1/3" camera. So the fact that it costs more than some 1/2" cameras would imply that it's not too compromised, but -- the proof will be in the pudding.

That's very interesting to me. Without getting entirely off topic (but replying to your post), I think the DVX has several legs up on the XL2. I've used both, and if it were my choice on a set, I'd pick the DVX. Color is eons better and I really like having the huge 3.5" LCD. I have yet to notice a difference (resolution-wise) that the "native 16:9 chips" makes during playback, and resolution is actually higher in 4:3 mode on the DVX. Everyone has their preferences - this is all just personal taste anyway - but I think it's a little much to say that "the DVX gets eaten alive by the XL2." At the end of the day, it's all how you use it anyway...

Well, I'm not arguing about what anyone might like better. I'll probably like the JVC HD100 better than the Panny HVX - if only because of form factor. I was just talking about the image. Trust me, on the right screen (any high end 16/9 monitor or TV will do) the resolution is a direct killer. Furthermore, the XL2's image contains a lot less noise. The DVX looks like it has gain turned on at 0 dB sometimes....

Of course it all depends what it's for: e.g. If you want to watch your footage on a 15 year old television set, probably it's all good. Doesn't take away the difference is there. On any nowadays 16/9 TV the difference is quite obvious...

It's been said many times before....but.....Panasonic's elusive Gamma Curve pimp slaps the competition. It just looks the best in terms of getting that "Film Look". Period.

I would automatically assume the HVX will do the same.
