HVX200 has FireWire IEEE 1394

Why wouldn't it?

Although it might be nice to have USB2 and Firewire400/800 to be compatible with *EVERYONE*....but 1394 is fine by me any day of the week.

Interesting ... found this quote from the same page:

"DVCPRO HD/50/25 and __DV recording__"

First time I've seen mention of standard DV recording. is this outside the panasonic DVPRO codec? Interesting indeed.

Woops... looks like my point was already pontificated in another thread.

I hate other threadly pontifications.

1394 might indicate Tape system - Why 1394 when you have P2? Although it would be a great way to transfer p2 to a computer.

Why would 1394 indicate tape system? Anyway, Barry has some nice tape decals if you should need them.

Also 1/3" chips is announced for anyone who might have been dreaming otherwise.

I wonder when Firewire 800 will be a standard connection? I'm just worried that some day that little 4 pin firewire connector is going to snap. The 800 connection looks like it would be a much tougher more industrial plug. Does any camera even high end HD cams use firewire 800??

just want to ask and dont want to start a new thread

, will the HVX pretty much look like the dvx but more resolution or will it look just as good of a 24p as SDX900 or even.. a varicam?

because we all know that the DVX film look doesn't really compare to the big bros.

can this question be answered without any technical confusion?

My guess is it'll be somewhere between the DVX and the big guns. The chips are just too small to have the same sensitivity or SN ratio as the varicam does, but the 4:2:2 recording format should really increase the color fidelity and dynamic range. Also I bet the new Cinegamma curves will be even more refined than before and the extra rez in 1080 will help make it look more like it's big bro, as long as the lens is up to snuff. In other words it will look damn good, but probably not like a $100,000 varicam package.

I'd go along with that too... I'm betting it'll be very solid, but there's very little chance it'll be up to the standards set by the $100,000 cameras.

Now, the $26,750 question is: How does it compare to an SDX900?

SDX: 2/3" CCD, DVCPro50, big & expensive removable lens, SD resolution only, $26,750 (without lens)

HVX: 1/3" CCD, DVCPro100, small non-removable (?) lens, HD resolution, (under $10,000 with lens)

Which would be better for DVD distribution? How about Film Blow-Up?

I know we can't answer these until proper side-by-side tests are conducted, but what are your guesses?

the difference between the HVX and the SDX gets arguable, no doubt. resolution count alone will make the HVX more suitable for film-out. but the SDX will still be a "better camera", with better lens, with more dynamic range.. things that please the eye, and probably more than resolution. but DVX was "fine" for filmout already, HVX will sure be excellent for it.
monitors and video projections get bigger/higher resolution, film projection, thank god, stays the same, so we're all the time getting closer
i wonder if Panasonic shouldnt make a "reel streem"-like extension to all its SD line to allow HD out of them. as much as i think about it.. it makes some sense.

For DVD distribution, undoubtedly the SDX ...

DVDs are SD so you would end up downconverting HD footage from the HVX200. The SDX just has far better specs in terms of SD acquisition.

Now for film blow-up, thats another story. Can't determine that yet, but the far increased resolution of the HVX is a big factor. But then again, the electronics of the camera don't seem to match up to the SDX. Only time and tests will tell, but I have a feeling the HVX will surprise us all.

I love the idea of having a choice of p2 or dv recording of course you want p2 but at least you can shoot on dv and make money with the cam so we can buy the p2 cards. It just makes the 200 more versatile and theres nothing wrong with that.
