HVX200 footage shown at Resfest

And that I believe because it records everything at 4k, but the myths going around about these other cameras and latitude is a laughable.

Remember it is 6 under, 2.5 over - which equates to milky blacks which get completely crushed and clipped highlights which can't be retrieved - when compared to film anyway.

If they claimed an even split, then I would be doubting.

The Dalsa Origin camera gets 11 stops of lattitude ... so take that walter !

That's just the 'official' and 'verifiable' claim. I attended an open house at Dalsa Corp in Waterloo this spring, and they had ten feet high blow ups from the camera with scenes that supposedly had 12 1/2 stops contrast in them - perfectly exposed, with all the details.

The camera itself looked a little ugly, but the output was just awesome!

"8 1/2 f/stop of lattitude in my DVX100A ???????
WHERE ?"

First you have to go to sleep. Then you have to dream, In your dreams you'll find the camera has 100 stops of latitude. Great thing is you can make great movies in your dreams too. Probably bette than when you are awake.

"Walter, I think reason has forsaken this board where the HVX is concerned."

I think if folks concentrated on the art of filmmaking as much as they worried about a stupid camera and other commodities that mean little, we'd have some pretty good talent here.

@Graff-

That's funny. " First you have to go to sleep. Then you have to dream...."

I went over to the bluesky web page. The commercial about the guy getting pulled over and then trying to run to the used car sale was funny. Very clever.

wait a minute..

the train I take into school only has 7 stops... does that mean it isn't as good as the DVX?

****.. now I am confused... do I get off at eglinton? or toronto??? oh man..

I just thought that was worth repeating.

Walter makes some valid points.

Walter does make some valid points. He does shoot DVCPROHD already, and is very familiar with the format. HD is costly...

but then, this industry is costly. In school, I bought my own 16mm sync sound camera because I wanted to do my personal projects at any given moment....and spent the $$$ to do it. I havent been on the board here very long, however, i sense alot of people here are similarly motivated....they want their own camera do do work/shorts whatever whenever they feel like it.

So whats better, HDV cameras or HVXDV50/100? Well, whatever your choice....you'll need good computer hardware, lights crew etc to shoot anything remotely narrative. I think expense is a given, even on low budget projects that still costs alot.

Personally I lean towards the hvx over any hdv....so far....I'll be going to Jan's presentation in Chicago Oct 9 to get a good idea. I like dvcprohd...either going uncompressed into my system, or even firewire in (as long as I dont need to do alot of sfx, and then again....alpha channels in compositing programs eliminate alot of that anyway).

A good camera will help in the craft of media production, but it won't make anyone who has no talent any good. For indy filmmakers, the hvx may work very well, becuase P2 is still cheaper than film and similiar in workflow. But we all need to see some real footage tests from this camera, as well as the XL-H1.

For people doing events, weddings, etc...don't worry about it. Keep using the XL-1 or whatever and keep your costs down. Don't buy a camera just to have it, or to go broke.

I do not recommend any format of HD or even uncompressed SD to anyone unless they are working with a budget. Period. If you can afford film or cinealt..then don't bother with any 1/3 chip camera at all.

Just remember, with higher rez comes greater responsiblity in production. I've noticed that people trained in film have had an easier time shooting on true HD formats than eng or event shooters upgrading to HD.

Jan is hosting the same free HVX-200 seminar at RESFEST in Los Angeles and in Chicago:
LOS ANGELES, Egyptian Theatre: Friday, Sept. 30, 4PM
CHICAGO, Museum of Contemporary Art: Sunday, Oct. 9, 2:15PM

Even more enlightening is David Leitner's RESFEST Talk which compares the HVX-200 to the Canon XL-H1, JVC's GY-HD100U and the Sony HVR-Z1U.

Somebody know if the panny200 will record HD in miniDV tapes too, like HD100 or just in the P2 cards?

There is a thread that says "what we know" at the top of the HVX200 forum. Take a look at it amigo. The basics about what the HVX200 can do are there.

Man that was quite an experience, seeing that little camera make these big beautiful 60' size images across the Egyptian's movie screen.

There is a post with pictures of the HVX that Haakon put up, and more reviews:

No offense but I've seen these "laboratory test"s of latitude and equate them to proving a man can jump 20 feet in a hurricane. In the real world the DVX is nowhere near that latitude. Well it is, it's just that you don't want to see the picture at both ends. Problem with the HD version is that beyond a certain f-stop you actually don't get HD at all. I've discussed it on another board here. It's a physical limitation of a CCD that is as small as the ones are on these prosumer cameras. It's claimed by some that a Varicam has 11 stops of latitude. But those of use that use the camera know you'd be lucky to get eight. And you are going to tell me a 1/3 inch SD camera with 1/5 the electronics is getting 8 1/2 with 2.5 overexposure latitude. In a test tube maybe. They can clone cells in a test tube too, but it doesn't work that way in the real world. Poppycock as far as I see!
Walter Graff:

THANK YOU! Are you and me the only people on the net who doesn't buy into this 11-stop latitude crap? Does anyone understand what this actually means? How the hell are they measuring this crap and getting these ranges? Unbelieveable!
