looking for a external HD to go along with my MBP and panny HVX200 P2 for video storage in the field then to bring into studio for editing on MP in FCP.

looking at the G-tech mini and the lacie rugged

what is the prefferd HD for this type of usage?

and also is it possible to capture directly onto the G-tech HD directly ?

I use the 500g G-Drive for in the field use. I will transfer my P2's, P2 Store, or FS-100's to the drive at night. Works great. THe drive fits nicely in the camera bag with the 200.

Never used the lacies, because everyone I talked to, including my studio, have told me that their Lacies have failed in a year or less. So I never bought them. I am not saying personally don't buy them, I just don't know them at all.

I always get the FW 400/800 on my G-drive, fast transfers, but never have recorded directly to the drive. It is just not a workflow that I do.

Single platter HD's are always the safest, but I need a lot of G's on my trips. So I am just extra careful when I travel with them. Better safer than sorry.

I recommend all G-tech Drives. This year I have had 7 Lacie drives fail and will never purchase another Lacie product. G-Tech is by far the most reliable drive I have used.

We run the G-Tech 500's at work as both media drives and as a redundant raid-array. They have been pretty reliable although one of the two drives in the 500 did crash on me and had to be sent back to G-Tech for repairs (no data was saved) but they do offer a very good warranty service and we had the drive back in quick amount of time.

I have a LaCie at home that I have been using for personal projects and as a way to backup all my video and music files and it had been dead for a few months until I got DiskWarrior and rebuilt the drive. It has actually done that twice to me (although the second time I saved the data) but I don't trust these drives as much as I used to.

I stay stick with the better brand, which would be G-Tech, and always back-up your data in 2 places (at least).

I have two G-Tech 500's at work as well. Transferring large files all day back and forth and no trouble at all.

Great drives!

An alternative is to build a 2-3 stripped SATA Raid case. Use reliable drives like Hatachi or Seagate.

LaCie and G-tech both make RAID boxes also, but I haven't tried them.
