Dear All,
I would like to know any expert using a PC laptop with Avid Xpress Pro HD to record directly from HVX200.
Is it possible?
Does it work?
How is the preformance?
Thank you very much.

I've done this as a test only, running AXP on a PC laptop with external USB2 drive for storage. Recording 1080i24PA with DVCProHD codec. When it works, it works great, but during the one hour test the computer stuttered once at the OS level, window's burp, not from AXP, but it stopped the capture. Easy enough to restart, but wouldn't want to rely on this setup if you can't stop, or don't have a backup.

hi, riellyboy, thanks.
Will it be better if we use firewire HDD? Would you mind to reveal your computer configuration, like CPU, ram, etc., so that I know at least what kind of computer I should have before I try?

Hi!, can I come in on this?
I have a Dell Inspiron 9400, 2.16 GHz dual core, 2 Gig RAM. Captureing 1080i/25 to AXP 5.2.2. Few problems, EXCEPT, when the audio overloads, the capture aborts and has to be restarted (I was recording a schol panto, with a lot of exitable teenagers!)
The footage was going to an external G-Drive USB. I'm not sure whether a firewire drive would work for capture, I suspect not given AXP's finnicky nature regarding firewire.
HTH, Regards,
Dave

I heard about this long time ago: Though USB2 has a faster bitrate than 1394, the data transferred by USB2 is not in a stable and constant manner. Therefore, for video work, 1394 is the one to go. Am I correct about this?

Based on the posts that we so far have had, it seems that AVID is not a stable one to do "direct to computer."

Good news is I finally got my own HVX200, and I can do some experiement myself now.

Anyway, any more inputs, please?

I agree, that in general fw is better than usb, though I havn't tried daisy-chaining a cam through a drive to capture. If you have 2 fw ports on your laptop it may be differant.
I've been thinking of getting a G-SATA drive, and looking for an expresscard size SATA card, this would certainly get round the usb/fw debate!
As I said the set-up was pretty stable once I kept an eye on the audio. I did also record some performances that were 20-30min long with no trouble, UNTIL I shut down the comp without disconecting the drive, Result....corrupted files and a total loss, even after checkdisk. USBs will do this if you don't use the "safely remove hardware" to disconnect them first.
Regards,
Dave
