HVX200 Aftermarket Microphone Mount - ?

I've tried searching the forum and google and have only found one possible solution from www.bracket1.com. But that one doesn't fit my needs...
Anyone know of a mic mount that will hold up to abuse? Of 7 new HVX200s, 2 of them got mounts broken week out...
Tired of the homemade solutions we've used in the past, looking for a good legit unit, if one exists...

Anyone?
Matt

You probably already know this, but the top shoe mount is more durable than the side mount if you're not using it for something else. Many clips available for that. I don't use any mic attached to the camera usually.

I am aware of those options, but I would prefer to keep the mount location where it is so that the operators can use whatever other accessories they want as they see fit...

Maybe another option would be to get a sturdy triple shoe mount (the kind that attaches to the center top shoe and has additional shoe mounts on each side). I have one of these but it can be cumbersome if the attachments are heavy (i.e. light on one side, small monitor on the other, etc.). The total length is about 8 inches long.

Does this get in the way for using the top handle?
These units will be seeing battle :kali: in Iraq and Afghan, so less obtrusive and as durable as possible is the main requirements...

EDIT: Is breaking these a common issue?

We have a new sponsor here who makes alternative mic mounts, the J-Rod. I have no experience with those and don't know if they're supposed to be more rugged, but it might be something you'd want to look into.

i use the audio technica at8410. adds about 5" to the vertical profile of the camera. so stealthy its not, but it works great...

Thats not quite what I am looking for... I guess the term should be a mount for the microphone mount... Nothing fancy is needed for microphone itself, just need it to stay on the camera longer then a week...

Something like this would be a great solution. Metal so it shouldnt break, and has ball mount so it can move around a bit it needed...

Or a bracket like http://www.broadcastrepair.com/sales/detail.asp?partno=MM2 thats meant for the HVX200..

The extension bracket I am referring to does not get in the way of carrying the camera by the top handle. Picture a flat piece of metal about 8 inches long and 1 inch wide that attaches at its' center to the shoe on the front handle area of the camera just behind the built in stereo mic. You would have approximately 4 inches protruding to the left and right of center of that shoe. I also have one that mounts on the far left (or right) side and is about 5 inches long. This alows you to attach an accessory on the side of the tape transport or on the side of the camera LCD. The more stable solution is the other piece center mounted. I have never broken this on any camera I have used with it, but then again, I'm not ducking for cover in Iraq!

At Best Buy, I got a cheap bracket for my DVX that is meant for small cameras without hot shoes but it mounts to the bottom by the tripod screw hole and goes out to the side and has 2 hot shoes. It cost like $30 but it has a screw on the bottom to still mount the camera to anything else. The brand is Sima and it's called the video bracket.

vette racer,

As Barry pointed out I have an alternative mic mount line called The J-Rod.
They are very durable and extremely useful for mounting 2 mic s, or a mic and radio receiver. It also moves the mic about 4 inches back, keeping a long shotgun or a wind muff out of the shot.
Please check it out at www.thej-rod.com. If it turns out The J-Rod isn't right for you I will refund your money-we all have enough accessories we don't use, and I don't want The J-Rod to be one of them!

I am currently testing Th Ex Twin mount on an HVX200 with the help of a video journalist-it's solid aluminum and very strong-I give it a 2 year warranty, but I don't think anyone will break it ever.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I totally agree with Jeffyr and I just might be that guy who he says is testing the ex twin on the hvx200

I just got the ex twin mount from him today (fast shipping as well and good price) and the quality of the metal is great and will last for a long time compared to the cheap plastic shotgun mic holder that came with my Panasonic. The dual hot shoe mounts will come in handy and free up the original hot shoe on top of the Panasonic microphone for a light or something.

Jeff is great at communicating and emailing and plan on getting other video journalists at our newspaper to upgrade their shotgun mic mounts with his stuff.

Eric is "that guy"!
We are banging out the details now on the proper hole spacing.
This will be the strongest replacement mic mount that also allows a radio receiver to be mounted along with a shock mount.

Sorry for being late on the reply...
I would love to see some pictures of that setup. Looks to be the closest thing to what I want on market.
I have made a crude prototype bracket with an equipment rack rail bracket, plan to make a better one and have someone test it out and go from there... Once I get a non hokey looking one done I will try to post pics to get thoughts.

I too would loooove to see a picture of this little thingie !

The website says that the EX mount is ONLY for the Sony ex cams.
Is it possible to adapt it on a HVX200/HPX170 ?

Can it be shipped to France.

You can see it mounted on the Sony EX1 on my website, www.thej-rod.com
It is the same bracket, just modified hole spacing for the HVX200. The bracket is cut from a solid block of aluminum and finished with a black anodizing. You will be able to mount your mic in a rubber band shock mount and also mount a radio receiver. It has a 2 year warranty, but I believe it will not break. The photo is of the prototype, which didn't have a finish I liked-the actual part has a nicer finish.

YES! If there's any list of waiting buyers for the HVX version of the EX Twin, please add me to it: ksmcbob at embarqmail.com

I got my HVX used, missing the original mic mount. I'd been tinkering with replacing it with a side-mounted shoe, but obviously hadn't gotten nearly as far or as elegant as you have.

Also would be interested in a version for the PD-150/170.
edit: measurement on 2 mount holes is 1.105" center-to-center, mount screw is 0.120" dia.

Mcbob,
Can you email me a photo of the PD-150 mounting location?
You can send it to Jrodinfo@verizon.net.
I can get an idea if anything else needs to be done to my mount to replace the mic clamp.

Jeff

Please check out my line of accessories at the link below.
I have a replacement for the mic clamp that will not break and is very reasonable.
let me know if you have any questions.
