Hello everyone,
I have been using the HVX200 for a number of years now. During that time I have shot almost exclusively in the 720p24pn setting. As I'm sure is the case for many of you, I love working with progressive footage and the use of less space on the p2 cards is a big bonus. I just began working with a client who would like to have the footage shot in 1080i60i, but they like the 24p look.
I did some tests recently with a friend of mine, and we shot footage in all of the 1080 options on the HVX. When importing the 1080 24p footage it appears in FCP as 1080 30p. I had hoped that the HVX was capturing 1080 24p much like the DVX100 captures 480i24p, with the camera adding the pulldown while capturing the interlaced image. What I had expected was for the footage to import as 108060i, but retain the look of 24p. Has anyone figured out a way to shoot 1080i60i24p in this way?
Also, the footage doesn't seem to play correctly once it is in FCP anyway. If I add this 1080 24p to a timeline, the timeline defaults to 1080 30p. The footage plays back looking extremely interlaced with a lot of motion blur. I know that some motion blur is normal for 24p footage, but this is way more extreme than anything I've seen in the past. This blurred motion appears on my Dell 24" monitor and the 46" 1080p Samsung LCD that I have connected to the computer as well (via DVI - HDMI). The 1080 30p test shots of course show up as 1080 30p in FCP as well. This footage plays back better, but still contains a good amount of blur.
The other 1080 footage that we shot (1080i60i & 1080 24pA) plays back fine.
Finally, ALL of the footage looks great when played back from the HVX200 to a HDTV directly. No problems at all with motion/interlacing in any of the 1080 options.
I've had some advice pointing me to just shoot 720p24pn and encourage my client to do the 1080i60i conversion when the finished edit goes to tape. Any thoughts on this as well? I'm not sure I get what the point of having the 1080 24p option is if it doesn't give you a 1080i60i image. Wouldn't you just shoot in 24pA if you wanted to edit progressive?
Sorry for such a long post, especially since this is my first one to this forum! I apologize if this issue has been addressed in the past. I did a search but did not come across it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff
