HVX vs RED suggested price

Don't hold your breath

Don't hold your breath

Anyone holding off buying the HVX200 for the RED cam is probably making a mistake.

There is no doubt that the RED cam is technologically possible. But at our price point of around $10,000 or less, it certainly is improbable.

Besides, this cam will probably not be out for another couple of years. There isn't even a prototype floating around yet. Once the prototype comes out, which could be another year out, then add on another year for the production units to start rolling out.

Believe me, I hope I'm wrong. I'd love for digital cinema to equal the quality of film so that all this film vs. video arguments would go away.

If 4k were possible now at a decent price, I'm sure one of the major manufacturers would have released it already. That is the nature of competition. They wouldn't be holding out on technology when their whole survival and profit mechanism depends on coming out with the latest and greatest technology before their competitors do.

By the way, you'll never see the latest techology come out at the price of a camcorder. They always debut at a high price point. The companies have to recoup their R&D costs before everyone and their cousins release their version. That's why it took years for HD and 24p to become available on a prosumer cam after the Cinealta was released.

'Nuff said.

I may not have to hold off buying a HVX if Panasonic doesn't get their production up. :)

OK, I'm done being a smart-ass....all the waiting has made me a little crazy. :)

No way I would wait on RED if anyone is considering it, but what might interesting at only a moderately higher price point from the HVX is the Grass Valley Infinity. I'm holding off for that until I see what that will do. Doesn't give you a higher data rate than DVCProHD on the HVX, but it IS a 2/3" camera with a lens choice, and rumor has it that although 24p is not currently available, it will be added via firmware. No - I don't work for GV, but as a user of Panasonic's SDX900, I like the idea of a 2/3" camera with a lens option over a 1/3" cam without one - although if the GV cam isn't proven by NAB, I'm all over the HVX. Maybe the Firestore will be out by then, and everyone will have figured out the best way to work with that P2 crap (I'm probably the only one, but as someone who is used to shooting 100 tapes for network broadcast programs, the thought of having a technology that gives me 4 minutes of footage at a time for $1000 is poop. They should have made a 100-200GB storage option WHILE they were making the camera, so anyone not shooting a doggone sample clip for the net could use it when it came out). You might ask why, if I like 2/3" so much and want to shoot HD, why not get a Varicam. The answer is, I'm looking for a camera to own. A $20,000 Infinity sounds much more appealling for ownership than a $70,000 Varicam. Would be sweet though.
