HVX versus the Varicam

...I think also Barry Green deserves a bonus for all his 10.000 messages promoting the Panasonic thing. Well done!

The flip side of that coin is that Barry is a very talented producer/director, and the more time he spends online the less time he has to spend on location actually producing and directing. At the Pacific Southwest Emmy Awards in San Diego a few years ago me and Barry sat at the same table as we each received Emmy Awards - Barry for a great PSA, and me for a one-hour sports documentary. Personally I'd like to see Barry balance his efforts between production and techboards. He doesn't just write good camera guides and tech columns - his actual productions rock!

I wouldn't mind using HVX's to co-produce something with Barry...

Let's look at cars for an analogy, shall we? (I hear the groans already...)

No groans here. Maybe also like auto NAV systems. They're an expensive option now, standard in the future.

Also, do you really think Panasonic is going to release a 6K camera that can match it's top model in terms of image quality?

Of course-- if the market wants a Varicam-resolution, if not better, in a 1/3" and portable camera system for less than $10,000, versus $90,000 for a VariCam w/HDTV lens, then Panasonic, or whatever other company, will do what they can to provide that, so they can make money. It ultimately comes down to making shareholders happy, and that's what Panasonic is determined by.

Then again, a 2/3" Varicam may have outstanding advantages compared to the upcoming HVX. Perhaps a niche will develop out of this, where Varicam users will find other ways to implement and capitalize on the Varicam to make up for an equivalent that is a fraction of its top-end price. It's important to know that if a company sees a profit for a target market, it will advance in any way it can, without considering what it has released in the past. Certainly, Panasonic did this considering but not accounting for the differences in price from its current and only DVCProHD 24P camera and the soon-to-be-available (hopefully) HVX200. With the undeniable hype on this forum, and with its outstanding specs and constant talks of creative production workflows, I think Panasonic with this camera will be a major winner, in an ideal sense and not considering the possibility of camera defects. Regarding the Varicam, maybe firmware and add-ons can distinguish it from the HVX in the near future. In addition, it should also be noted of the possiblity (though I have not run into any confirmation) that the Varicam can possibly be used to record to P2 via firewire. (?) I'm not sure about this last last assumption, but certainly worth considering for such an expensive 24P HD camera. There was a P2 port in the HVX's brochure where up to 4 or 6 P2 cards could be held and used for continuous recording.

The specs of the HVX have done something that no other camera has ever done before. It has baffled and perplexed the film and video world who know of the camera thus far. I think we all can't wait ... unless those waiting for XDCAM HD...

wouldnt we all ..get in line, and take a number. :)

Or he could get in line and take a number since my resume includes:

- Contributor as a producer, director, editor, and/or DP for over 700 national television programs that aired on twelve different broadcast and cable networks

- Multiple Emmy Awards winner as a producer, director, and cameraman

- Over 50 national awards

- National amd multi-region Emmy judge

- Member of the Board of Governors and Board of Directors for several national and regional trade organizations in the media business

- Guest writer for several television and film magazines

- Member of the Board of Governors for the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), Pacific Southwest Region. NATAS is the Emmy organization, and with Barry living in Las Vegas, it's the NATAS chapter that Barry recieved his last Emmy from.

You see, I'm one of those rare visitors to DVX User that has a media resume bigger than Barry's. We're friends, and thus my tongue in cheek offer to co-produce something with him. I visit DVX User because I really like to use low-end equipment for certain of my productions, and I like to be on top of the "to-the-streets" opinions on possibilities for using it. I like DVX User!

My usual camera systems are Varicams, F900's, and other high-end cameras.

IMHO, comparing these two cameras is a fruitless excercise. All thing being equal, the Varicam is vastly superior to the HVX, just as, using Barry's car analogy, a Ferrari is vastly superior to the Hond Accord. However, all things are not equal, especially price. The Ferrari and the Honda will get you from point A to Point B. I've always thought of the question as, not what a camera can do, but what I can do with the camera.
If all things were equal, the VariCam would be equal to the HVX. In reality, we can't yet be certain just how the VariCam is superior. The VariCam will probably will have a better image, as well as greater light sensitivity. It will probably have more frame rates. But the HVX will have P2, which has arguably greater reliability, is quieter (no moving parts), and has a greater recording time (two 8-GB P2 cards can record 40 minutes of 720p24 vs. 32 minutes on a DVCProHD tape, and P2 capacities will only increase). The HVX supports more formats, including 1080i, 1080p24, and 1080p30. And let's not forget that it even records DV -- which makes it more versatile (even if shooting DV on an HD camera seems like overkill). Lastly, the HVX is smaller and lighter. I guess it all depends on how you define "performance."

Emanuel, does the HVX have changeable lens or are you referring to an external adapter (as indicated)? and if so, what exactly does the external lens accomplish for one . . just widen the shot or telephoto the distance or DOF or ??? lastly, if you indicated that the external lens is much favorable and hits more than one of the previously mentioned, can such be done on a dvx100a, ....b, or DVC60 as example with the similiar expected result?

He is referring to an external adapter that lets you use 35mm lenses. But, that is too soon to talk about, because there isn't any yet. The camera isn't out for people to try it out.
But, maybe there are some guys already working on a model, who knows?

[well, here is the results from there...]

No my fellow, as we all know HVX don't have interchangeable lens, so if you want to use 35mm still lenses, you're welcome @guerilla35.com (I'm not their rep, OK?). IMHO they have - as far as I know - the best 35mm adapter (external, of course), truly indie.

But you can follow other options here.

And, please, not forget this.

<PS> Hooops! Fidel answered first (and wisely, as always), now it's not necessary anymore this help...anyway, here it is.

I'll be waiting patiently for the hvx but I do have a concern. In investing for a new cam, how much will I need for a new system that can deal with HD? What kind of specs are the min requirement for editing on a pc? Any replies welcome.

I think there is one factor that has been left out here and that is the P2 itself.

The HVX would have been vastly more expensive than it currently is; if it was to have a DVCproHD tape transport mechanism like the Varicam, that is a big cost to.

DSP is a funny one, because it is a processor it is well known that processor power increases as the cost decreases.

Of course the biggest bottleneck is the 1/3" therefore I would like to think of the HVX as being "Half a Varicam" (on the account that the CCD is half the size of the Varicam) *OK guys this is just light humour* :)
