HVX shooting with laptop

I have a western digital passport 120gb usb 2.0-powered external hard drive that I use with my sony laptop for offloading p2 cards on location.

My question is . . .

When I get my apple desktop, will I be able to access the mxf files on the western digital hard drive so I can edit on the apple? Will there be compatibility issues?

In other words, I plan to capture to an external hard drive on location from a pc laptop, and edit the footage later on my apple workstation using FCP. Is this possible?

Also, in order for this to work, does the hard drive have to be emtpy, or can I have some of my random, backed-up computer files on it?

i have a macbook pro, lacie and a western digital notebook.i take the MXF files to my studio and convert the files into quicktime on the desktop.
it is a smooth process and there are no issues as long as the conversion to quicktime is on the machine used for the actual edit.
cheers
shiv
