HVX Sample Material - An idea for all of us!

I have an idea that might help us out with regards to seeing HVX material without having to second-guess a web delivered video. Perhaps we could encourage the powers that be at Panasonic to create and FTP site where we could all download a DVCPRO HD encoded file in both 720p and 1080i of the same shot.

This would be a good jumping off point and would allow all of us to import the material into our own editors, work with the DVCPRO HD format and the images the camera produces and then experiment with different delivery methods on our own.

At this point, as members of this forum, we could then all report back our individual experiences with the same set of “control” footage. While we are at it we should also get them to do the same thing with DVCPRO 50 of the same shot.

This would be very beneficial to us all. Yes the file sizes could be large but if we limit the shot to say 90 seconds it would not be too bad. It would necessitate the need for a broadband connection but most of us should have access to that either at work, home or both.

Any ideas? Perhaps Barry or Jan could help make something like this happen.

Just curious, do other manufacturers provide footage from their cameras? Be interesting to find out?

good idea, but I think it's just too much effort and too late now: I'm sure the internet will be flooded with HVX-footage of countless owners within 30 days from now. So who will start experimenting with some standardized footage? - That would doubtless be very scientific, but I don't think it can be managed, both offering (and the big effort that your exact suggestion would mean) and getting people applying it...

There will be enough footage and comparisions in the net I believe and articles of this kind http://dvxuser.com/articles/shoot3/ will show you each single detail / difference that you want to know, I'm sure...

As for me: I want to compare the different dynamic ranges of different cameras, or what about comparing the effects of variable framerates? or different compressions for the same footage? - There's so much to compare and I think enough users that will put results in the internet with adequat footage for their purposes. It takes too many specific situations for stressing out dynamic range / footage of fast movements in i/p / low-light / lot contrast / stage / nature / human skin / sports / .... people will report about all this and as a PAL-user I will just relax and enjoy the footage and experience of HVX-owners until the camera appears in Europe.

I still remember when I downloaded my first DVX footage files and then trying to convince myself that it looked amazing. It was some footage of seagulls on a beach and some ocean waves crashing on the shore. Not the best stuff to showcase such a great cam. OMG!!! THE SEAGULL IS IN 24 FRAMES!!!!

Don't remember who shot it and why they chose to show us what they did. It's as if they got the DVX, rushed outside and shot the beach for a minute and rushed back in to upload it just to be the first or something.

It was probably someone here! He He!!!

Jan said the newest info DVD will have footeage shot by the hvx200.
I would request a copy of that..inport into you editor and play.

Ha. I remember that footage. There was also the footage from Vietnam that sold me early on. Ah 24P...

Actually, I think this is a good idea too, and it doesn't even have to be footage from the HVX200...just some file using the DVCPRO-HD codec.

Some of us will be facing a significant post-production change once the HVX comes out. It may mean new computers, new software, or both, and possibly even new related peripherals. It would be handy to get a jump on sorting this all out.

the HVX will be out later this month. no point in setting it all up this late.. might as well worry about what your getting your cat for christmas now.

The responses to this concept are interesting. Why would people actually be against obtaining access to sample material from the camera? Are we just supposed to buy it because someone says "it rocks" or "any professional knows this is the future of greatness"?

DVD's do absolutely no good if the material is already compressed into MPEG-2 or has been compressed poorly. Anyway they are SD and I do not want to see MPEG-2 compressed HD files when evaluating image quality for our needs. Setting up an FTP site with the resources Panasonic has is not difficult and would take all of 5 minutes to complete.

Videos for the web will also suffer from compression artifacts. Unless I can see DVCPRO-HD encode footage from the camera on my plasma and on my employers plasma in HD played off P2 or off a a hard drive then I will have to pass.

I am not going to authorize the expenditure on an item like this if it does not produce the results in the end. It really looks like the 10-20k HD price point is really not going to get the results I am looking for. It looks like at least 50K or more at this point.

I am concerned about the lack of any real material to look at. Sure it's next week, then it is next week again, and then another few weeks we promise. I am rather put off by no material on the DVD. Why even send the thing out if it just duplicates information on the web site. Anyone can read that stuff.

Show us the material. We are going to be making a decision about this very soon and I for one am moving away from this solution very quickly. If it can not produce 70-80% of the image quality I see on INHD or Discovery HD then we will abandon HD for the time being and let everyone else be beta testers for this new product.

If we have to spend 50K+ then that is what it takes. If we are better off with a very high quality SD solution then so be it. I just wish everyone would stop with the smoke and mirrors and step up to the plate with the product they have.

Yes - next week. We shall see.

Once the camera is out footage will be pouring in. Just a few weeks. Jarred even mentioned trying to get a footage sample for everyone to play with. And besides, we've all been listening and suffering the same questions and comments for the last nine months. Just one more week won't kill you.

..my point is the same as isaac's.
if everyone around you has a candy cane.. why would some guy named "panasonic" have to let you taste his? .. does it taste any different?
the footage will be right here on DVXUser. if panasonic is going to do some sort of expo DVD id put some money down that our own barry green who will no doubt have comparision footage here right away and a DVD and book for it asap would likely be the one to do it for them.. if youve never seen any footage from engineers is about as bad as it comes and ill go on record stating that that its a bad dea to have them do it. i would believe Jan fells the same in that accord. alot of us here are professionals and theres nothing stopping any of us from posting full DVCPRO HD files on the web to download. im sure everyone will have their hands full with it soon enough. and theres no reason it has to come from panasonic. if they wanted it done theyll hire someone like Barry and Jarred or just buy the results from someone who's already gone and done it .. again ..like Barry and Jarred. its not that its a bad idea.. its just that setting the expectation that it has to come from somewhere deep in the heart of panasonic itself is a little odd IMHO. if anything you should be begging for a completely unbiased 3rd party test and review to make a purchasing decision from. ..again just IMHO.

relax derek, i really dont think the original poster cares about where the footage comes from.. hes likely just asking panasonic right now because they are the only poeple with real access to the camera right now. as to whether or not people should look to a manufacturer sponsered review/comparision/whatever for making important buying decisions.. well thats up to them. its not necessarily bad marketing to put such things out there. but IMHO its rediculous for the consumer to buy into anything coming from a manufacturer or someone being sponsored by a manufacturer. independent reviews and such are worth gold over any sugar coated manufacturer blather any day. which is why currently, the premiere marketing inserts used by camera manufacturers are independent reviews or experiences taken after the fact from real world pros/independents that are not company sponsored.

In the FCP 4.5 box there was a Panny DVD with sample DVCPRO-HD clips on it. Just to show how FCP handles it and how good it looks. Maybe they'll do something like that again. In wich case they should send one to me aswell :)
Shure footage will be out soon. But I would like it to be native dvcpro-hd! A decent mpeg is nice to look at, but doesn't tell you quite as much about the camera's possibillities. But wether panny hosts the space where I can grab a couple of files like this or anyone else makes no difference for me. But I would like to be able to...

I am with Oliver. The files that will be swimming around here will not be native HD. Unless one has big time server capabilities. Panasonic does! This would make my purchase now, a bit later, or something else decision much, much easier. I need to see footage from the HVX in all native formats to make those decisions.

I'd like too!

I don't believe Panasonic is stupid, like you do.

I think they're intelligent to know that they can burn a DVD for a computer, with several GIGABYTES of native clips. No need to waste internet bandwidth on every junky who wants a download, when a DVD costs 20 cents, and can contain almost nine gigs.

I want the native clips too, but I agree with the post by Neile, where he said "independent reviews and such are worth gold over any sugar coated manufacturer blather any day."

So I'm looking forward to all judgements from all quarters.

That, and of course, many camera stores I've been to allow people to take some sample footage with the cameras. As long as I bring my laptop along, I could just run the footage to the drive very quickly, and preview it right there.

I dislike lazy consumers, unwilling to go get the information they want. Then again, I'm not a lazy consumer, so I don't know how they feel about being disliked. Maybe I shouldn't dislike them. Maybe their shoes were too tight as children, and now they're unfortunately unable to be hard-working consumers. ;)

Have a good day, folks!

It is not being a lazy consumer. In fact I have probably spent too much time looking into the camera. It is the work that keeps me away from doing more. You know shooting, editing, meeting with clients. Free time is very limited. And if Panasonic could help out some interested, and loyal customers, that would be a great service, and well appreciated.

Guys, we're only about 36 hours away from the camera's big DV Expo rollout. There'll be footage galore on display at DV Expo, and I would presume that some will be available for internet download in its native codec. There'll probably also be more still shots too.
