HVX recording directly to Macbook Pro hard drive

I've searched through several of the threads here on this topic but haven't been able to find a direct answer to my question. I will be recording several long events and interviews and would like to shoot them in 720p on the HVX and record directly to my Macbook Pro through FCP. Is there a way to do this? What settings do I need to choose in FCP and in the camera to make it work? Thanks for any help.

Recording long form to the internal drive isn't advised. You are asking the OS to compete with the applications when recording.

Get a FW400 ExpressCard/34 card and attach a firewire drive to that. Attach the HVX to the internal bus.

Set the cam to your capture settings for 720 whatever. You can't stream native formats.

Set the FCP preferences to match your cam, and set the scratch disk to your firewire drive. (or eSATA drive if you go that way.)

Log and capture using non controllable device.

Click on capture now to capture and escape to stop.

David,

Is there some significance to your suggestion to attach the HVX to the internal bus, rather than the FW card? I have a FW 400 card that has ports that are not powered unless you plug it into an external power supply. I am going to be doing some to direct to disk recording and I planned to attach the HVX to the unpowered port on the card to avoid any possibility of burning out the HVX's FW port (which apparently has happened to some people). I would record to an FW drive attached to the laptop's internal bus. Is there some reason I should switch the ports I plug things into?

Hey David,
You were right, the INTERNAL port is the preferred way to connect the camera.
Connect your drives to any PCMCIA card adapters.

I just shot a music video using the HVX to G4 12in powerbook. the set up was:

HVX -> G4 via firewire
G4 running FCP/capture now
G4 -> external USB HD set to scratch disk

I shot 720/24p. most of the shots were about 4 min long at a time. I though there might be a problem connecting the external HD via USB port but I had zero problems with this workflow. I've tested 30min of continues shooting before without a problem also. good thing is you don't even need to have a P2 in the camera. just plug in the camera to the laptop, launch FCP, go to capture now and set the capture setting to uncontrollable device, once you see the image, press capture now and your good to go. all the clips are saved as .mov files .

Give us some specifics about what type of USB drive, powered or bus powered, specifics of the actual hard drive itself, ie 7200 rpm, buffer, brand etc.

i do basically the same thing Leejam, but on my Macbook Pro. Firewire from the HVX200 into the Macbook Pro. FCP set to either 720p or 1080i depending on what im shooting. External 7200rpm USB 2.0 Hard Drive set as capture scratch. Also have done more than 30 minutes at one time capturing.
