HVX Prices

Now that it appears the HVX release is only a few weeks away, I thought of a thread to compare prices from different resellers.

Many places have a list price of $5995, or within that dollar range, and about $9995 for the camera plus two 8 GB cards.

The lowest I have seen so far (after the sales prices were cancelled/delayed) is at Safe Harbor ( http://www.sharbor.com ) with the two 8GB package for $9899, and the camera itself for $5849.

The best prices, as they have always been, are through reps you have done business with in the past that cut you special deals.

I can go to any reseller in town and get a better deal than the best advertized deal. Of course, it doesn't hurt to work out a package deal. For example, my purchase will be over 12,000 total, due to all the extra stuff I'll be getting with the HVX. This allows my dealer to give me a better price on everything.

I haven't been given a final price yet, but I know it'll be well under the best prices I've seen advertized which appear to be around 5400

Rush will do us right. Now, only if Panasonic can deliver enough cameras, we'll be fat city.

Spec Comm sure does make the pricing look attractive however. Oh well, Rush willd do us right? Right Rush? :)

Typically electronics (cameras/keyboards/stereos/etc) should be able to be purchased at at least 15% off list. I'm expecting prices should be @$5,100. Maybe they'll try to ream the first group of buyers because it's new, and then when there are shelves stocked full, the prices will come down, just in time for the HVX200a.

samy's was also offering it w/ the p2(4gig) bundel for $6400 (dv expo price) :p

though price is not the big concern for me... i'm more interested in del. date.

As I understand it, I won't need any P2 cards if I plan to capture to a FireWire drive, right? And will any external FireWire drive do it? Or is a special model needed?

You can't capture footage directly to a regular old hard drive. The camera is spitting out a large stream of data, which can't be stored by a regular "dumb" drive. You need a smart drive that has a mini-operating system, which is what the Firestore is and the announced Cineporter. Both are still in devleopment and not available yet. You could record to a hard drive that is part of a laptop or computer. But you can't just plug in a maxtor drive and have it capturing clips like a giant P2 card.

All you need Pascal is one P2 card and an external fire wire hard drive. Once the P2 fills up, connect your FW drive to the HVX and offload it. Or you can wait for the firestore drive which will be out sometime in march. One 4gb P2 will run you about $650 and the external fw dirve about $300. The firestore will cost around $2,000.
