Hi,

I have read most of the threads dealing with the subject in the title of this thread, and am aware that there are several threads with almost the same title. I have also read Barry Greens HVX book as well as made extensive research on the net. Lots of great info, but it is also all over the place as of course everyone's situation is different. I didn't find any thread that deals in a comprehensive way with-

HVX (PAL) + M2 - SETTINGS for "film out" and DVD.

So im hopping if some of you guys with lots of experience could chime in and help me figure this out.

Some questions to start with-

1 FILM OUT - What settings should the cam be set to so as to work the best for filmout? (frame rates, mode, knee, gamma...could someone run the whole menu? :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) i know it is allot to ask).

2 - DVD OUT - How does this relate to question #1? Will my "DVD out" be shi*ty at the same settings? Do i not need to worry about this?

thank you for youre help!

In terms of color and contrast can i judge this on the monitor of an application like DVC Rack? Is what i see what i will get when going to film?

Well you're going to have to take into account what sort of color correction you're doing in post as well as what stock you are planning to print to, as it may increase or decrease saturation and contrast. If you're using a contrastier stock you may want to capture a flatter image, and visa versa. Also you will definitely have to tweak your "DVD out" to match the effect that the film will have on the image.

You may be able to "un-calibrate" a monitor/monitor application to approximate the effect that printing to film will have on the image, but like all film work, there is always a level of guesswork and gut instinct involved, unless perhaps you can afford extensive testing.

I'm a little confused as to what you mean by "works best," as that would again, greatly depend on your choice of print stocks as well as what the actual look of the film is.

"Works best" - as in what settings, detail level, gamma...as in it may not look the best to use low contrast but it may help when going to film.

I was sure that i read somewhere that filmout from tape is done to one kind of film stock? That is if you are doing it through a lab but not shooting from a monitor or something like that. Maybe im wrong.

Maybe stupid questions-

Why not shoot all the time 720/50p and than convert to 25 but always have the option to go slow motion when i want?

What is the relationship between 1/50th shutter speed and 180 shutter angel? Does one exclude the other? In the DVfilm thread it says for film-out it is best to shoot 1080/25p at 1/50th shutter speed. But in smelni's thread people are talking about 180 shutter angel. What's the deal?
