HVX-P2Store-MacbookPro workflow Quesiton

Okay, here's what I need. I am going to be working on a commercial set where they have 2 HVX cameras, 2 P2 stores, and 4 8GB P2 Cards. The camera department is going to fill up a P2 card, put it into the P2 Store, and then when that is done, they will want the empty card back to keep shooting.

They want me to make another backup copy and verify the data on the P2 Store. So, I need the best solution to take the P2 Store, copy the contents onto an external HDD, via a Macbook Pro, and then I would like to be able to view/verify the files, either in Final Cut Pro, or a P2 Viewer software.

My question is this. What is my best solution for this environment? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I would definatly use final cut pro and just communicate to the client that you need "just a little" time and care to double check and make sure everything is ok. The challenge is coordinating set-up's, talent breathers with file maintenance. Just keep your coll and keep a matter of fact attitude about the proceedings. In other words, make sure they understand, you can't be rushed if they want it done right.

Thanks. So, to view the files in final cut pro, what do i do? I am quite proficient on final cut, but as most of the time I am digitzing footage through a canopus box from an Arri film camera, it is the whole P2 thing I don't know much about.

Do I just drag and drop the P2 Store contents onto my external hard drive? Will this erase the P2 Store? I don;t want to erase the P2 Store, as production wants to take it at the end of the day...full. My copy is strictly a backup. After I drag and drop the files, do I just import them into final cut?

Here is a good little online "seminar"(a Quicktime tutorial really) that was done by an Apple product manager for Final Cut. It deals specifically with what you are doing with the exception that he demonstrates taking footage directly from a P2 card in the camera rather than the P2 Store onto a firewire drive using the MacBook Pro.

You have to sign up to watch it but it will walk you through what you want to do.

Here is the sign-up page:

I also have a writeup on the P2 Store workflow:

Also look into getting the P2 Genie (www.p2genie.com), as it will automate the process of transferring files from the P2 Store to external hard drive. Typically you do not back up the P2 Store until the end of the day. But if you are in the need and have the time you can do it then and there. The latest version of the P2 Import function of FCP allows you to view the footage without importing.

Or there is P2 Log by www.imagineproducts.com...
