Here's an interesting comment / post from dvinfo.net.

Anyone care to respond?!?.....

Any validity to this claim?

Meryem:

Forget the HVX 200. Someone in the "biz" offhandedly commented to a group of us during a NYC lighting seminar that the HVX is already on it's way out since the P2 system just ain't doing it and it isn't catching on. I can offer no more than that because he was nebulous following that comment.

Hmmm... strange, but if it were true I could see how it would make sense. However, such a comment is based only on a "friend of a friend" business.

Don't take it too seriously folks, if the camera were being discontinued Jan would have mentioned something.

ROFL P2 isn't catching on? Are you serious? I keep hearing about huge outfits adopting the new workflow (including P2).

Also, I don't think ANY new technology has caught on immediately. I mean it took YEARS for color TV's to diffuse into the market. And color TV's were aimed at EVERYONE, products like this that are aimed at a small group (filmmakers) could take a lot longer to adopt. Even if it were a machine that could turn feces into gold, there'd still be a market diffusion period. The camera's been out for what? Like a year? Whoever said that is just impatient.

P2 is not catching on???

You can't find a 8 gig card to buy and when someone has one they'll go fast.
It is still a new product with size limitations. Can you imagine when the 16 and 32 gigs became available?
Even the camera itself is hard to find...

These kind of comments barely deserve to be responded.
Let's just use our good old sense.

I agree that these sorts of off hand comments from so called sources are almost always baseless. I don't know about the states, but over here the BBC is investing very, very heavily in its data based workflow future.

The GV Infinity and the Panasonic P2 formats have been chosen as the two candidates. Panasonic have to reveal a certain amount of product roadmap to this type of large customer, so I doubt very much the BBC would be looking at it in this fashion if it were 'on its way out'. More here:

Hmmm... let me take a wild guess as to who our friend is... he's in NYC, he's running a lighting seminar, and he's trashing the HVX... who could it be, who could it be?

Sheesh.

Read the "Who's Using The HVX" thread. Look at the 300+ broadcasters in the US alone that are using it. Ask any dealer -- *any* dealer -- how many HVXs they're selling, vs. how many HD100s or XLH1s. I have. I make a point of doing it, because it matters to me to know where the customers are. Down here in New Zealand the HD100 is pretty much dead on arrival. One dealer had one, and only one, and it took him five months to finally sell it. Another rental house/dealer had one that he tried to sell, took him ten months to get rid of it.

Meanwhile HVXs are going like gangbusters. Panasonic announced that they'd sold 10,000 of them in the first three months it was out.

Say hi to Walter, but thanks but no thanks, we're not listening to his death proclamations for P2 that he's been making since before the camera ever came out. The market, not Walter, will decide whether P2 is a success.
