HVX on HBO

The show's entertaining and looks great. After you show the training and personal lives of the boxers and their trainers, I now don't know who to root for.

I do have one question. Why are the whites so hot and blown out? Is it a camera setting (gamma, knee) or a by-product of downconversion (I'm watching in SD), or what?

Thanks.

Pretty sure it is the SD conversion. these shows go through so much compression before they are delivered to you via sat or cable.

thanks for watching.

Jeff you totally ignored my request to send you a reel but that's okay.. but, i'll have to knock you off your high horse a little, haha.. I saw that at least two of your p2 cameras have dead pixels.. you know that I had the same problem, except my dead pixel was red. I got the guys at the Jersey Panasonic repair facility to fix it for free.. you might want to check into that..

those dead pixels really bugged me, maybe b/c i knew what it was..

Also, there's this plug in for FCP (I know Vidiots cut on Avid) called reincarnation that gets rid of dead pixels in post.. but since you didn't edit it, maybe I should take that up with the Amoia brothers..

best,
patrick

good work man. I thought the series was really well done, awesome to see it was done by a fellow dvxuser, hell yeah!

ps, were you the one shooting the DLH/Diego Sanchez training footage that made its way on Spiketv for the UFC show? They were down there training cardio together and what not, anyways, the footage looked great and I was just curious if that segment was actually taken from the DLH/Mayweather series?

Sorry about the reel request. I have been out of the country since 24/7 and this is the first time i am able to go online. is there anyway to see it online?

the dead pixels were from the varicam, not the p2. the p2 is rock solid!!!

I am in spain right now on a job for 2 months (non p2) but i have it out here, when i get back to the states i will post some stuff from spain and vegas for you guys to see.

again thanks everyone for watching the show.

i would have to see it. do you know if it is on youtube or anywhere else?

thanks for the compliment.

No problems with the p2 store at all. I think that the days of the p2 store are limited because of the new and future cards. The best thing about the cards which i am sure you all know, each card is the same physical shape. so your record time will dramatically increase with each update and the card stays the same. can't do that with tape!
you can find the shows on youtube.

Yeah,
but maybe the P2 Store gets bumped up to lets say 160Gig, even with 32Gig cards around, it is handy to make an easy backup in your breaks without ereasing the P2 cards...
If this gadget would only be a little cheaper...

I meant to ask before, could you please tell us what your basic HVX settings were?

Gamma:
Color Matrix:
Knee:
Chroma Level:
Master Pedestal:

Also, any insight or opinion on what you've found to get the best from the HVX200?

I watched and enjoyed every episode. Please let us know when more of your stuff airs. Thanks.

Sorry for the delay in response, my PowerBook needed a new screen.

The settings that we used for the P2 were bone stock. We used the "V" and "D" settings and used as much shutter as we could under the fluorescents. The other P2 shooter (with Oscar) and I are both editors as well, so we both like to shoot as clean as possible then give it a "look" in post.

"Also, any insight or opinion on what you've found to get the best from the HVX200?"

Just use the camera's small size and portability to get it into places that it's older brother, the varicam, cannot get into. The other thing is that since it is tapeless, shoot, shoot, shoot. Then get rid of the bad shots on downtime or in between takes, you cannot do that with tape. That to me is priceless. As far as "in" camera tricks, I keep them to a minimum and try to do everything in post. The control you have in post over acquisition is dramamtic. If you know that you are going for a certain look start tweaking your camera, but if you know that you might have to use the same shot several times (in the show, promos, flashbacks, etc) then tweak it in post. When in the field I try to keep it as simple as possible because, as you know, there are 10,000 things going on that need your attention. The last thing you want to do is forget to load a setting then try to recreate it in post, it is very hard and time consuming.

Thanks for watching and I hope that this helps. I have some stuff in the works right now that will air this winter. I will keep everyone posted when it will air.
