HVX on HBO

Just to let you guys know, I am working with HBO to shoot a four-part reality series called "De La Hoya - Mayweather 24/7". We are going to follow the two boxers for a month using 2 Varicams and 2 HVXs. We are assembling dailies on location and the show will be edited in NYC on Avids.

The first show airs April 15th after Entourage. You can see a tease for the show on HBO's site.

Check out the show and let me know what you think.

Thanks in advance.

Just wondering if anyone saw the show? There were a lot of p2 shots intercut with varicam. Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks

this is the first time i saw this thread, thanks for brining ot back up.
I havent seen the show but will look for it!!!!!

Did you see it? How did the HVX hold up to its big brother?

Oh- i almost forgot , congrats on the sweet gig.

I just saw it and it looked great, The one I saw had 50 cent with Mayweather hanging out. Can you tell me or at least give me a hint about which parts where HVX and which were mainly Varicam?

OMFG, I wish I saw this thread last week. I saw the show. Didn't realize it was the first ep. Didnt realize our favorite camera was behind the scenes. I enjoyed it. Congratulations.

I'm surprised the HVX lens was able to frame Mayweather's big head :) On the other hand, he makes the show interesting.

Could you point out to me some of the HVX shots? Though I wasn't scrutinizing the image discernability, the hvx shots blended very well to a relaxed eye. I will be sure not to change the channel after Entourage this Sunday!

I saw the show and remembered this thread. Please do tell us which cam was used in which clips.

Easily the most impressive footage was that obtained of DeLaHoya in his home and the interview/workout footage of Mayweather that was done in very dramatic, high-key/low fill lighting. I was not impressed at all with the footage shot in the regularly-lit gyms (presumably fluorescent).

There was also some very nice looking time-lapse footage of beaches and other Puerto Rican landscapes.

Can you help us out by identifying the cams that shot those scenes?

The first show had a bunch of P2 footage. For time reasons I can't go through and point out all of the P2 footage, but what i can do is once i see show 2, i can tell you which shots to look out for in Mayweathers camp.
I think it is great for all of us using the HVX, that the P2 and Varicam cut together seamlessly and it is hard to pick the P2 footage out of the show.
There were shots in show one from Puerto Rico that i thought were varicam but where in fact P2.
As for the lighting, we have to work around Mayweather, he likes to see everything that is going on in the gym so he likes the gym BRIGHT. We have a 25k over the ring, a 1k over the bags and we move a 5k around the gym. there are 2 huge garage doors that are open some times and closed majority of the time. So controlling the lighting and is impossible to keep consistant.

Keep watching the show and i enjoy the feedback.

Thanks, TwistedPost. I'll make sure to watch the next ep, not very hard since I'm a huge Sopranos fan and have it on HBO all Sunday night anyway.:-)

wondering...

wondering...

What frame rate are you shooting the HVX at? If 24PN then how are you handling the conversion?

we are shooting 720p/60p with a frame rate of 24 and 720p/24pn with a frame rate of 60 for slow motion. we use as much shutter as we can. we have two projects in our avid. one 59.94 and one 23.98. we bring it in using the avid media tool and then transcode the footage. after that we lay it to tape and send it to NYC for the edit.

Just a quick reminder that the show is on tonight after entourage (10:30 on HBO). I saw a rough cut and I can tell you that there is a lot of p2 footage. not sure if there is a tease at the top of the show or not but the first three shots are p2 then it goes into a recap from last week. when you hear some "stevie" and see vegas scenics those are all P2. the rest you will have to figure out on your own.

thanks for watching.

Jeff,
I was actually an editor for Countdown to Gatti vs. Mayweather and some other HBO boxing shows.. I was trying to get the producer to leap into the fire with my p2 camera, but they wanted to play it safe and shoot beta with the dvx100...

good to see that HBO is finally comfortable using this camera.. it's great for sports.. slowmo is butter.. I'd love to send you some stuff if you're interested in hiring shooters..

I watched it again last night, and I remember those opening shots you mentioned. I recall the vegas scenic shots and the time lapse. Again I enjoyed the training sequence. Wonder what shutter speed that was, though I'm sure you're too busy to entertain specifics, or even recall. I'm guessing that was varicam.

Indeed, very cool to see HVX/P2 on HBO.

I caught the show last night, all I can say is wow.

If those opening Vegas shots were done on the HVX.. well, lets just say my gf couldnt get me to shut up about it the whole time the show was on.

On a side note, I noticed ALOT of pixelation on some scenes where the was alot of Red. I assumed those were HVX shots :(

Other than that I was impressed, to say the least.

There's more; Evin Grant shot some HBO special with Snoop Dogg on the HVX; he was showing footage of it at the L.A. BootCamp.

just caught the end of an episode but it looks great, i dig the timing and music with some in camera fx...well done!

You're shooting this? That's awesome. I've watched the first 2 episodes after entourage and didn't even realize I was looking at some HVX footage. Even a better show now haha. Looks great and I can't wait for the fight...

can you remember which shot it was? just because the varicam sometimes shoots at 18db gain.

thanks again for watching.
