It would make more sense to use steel for the weight plate, as it would be at least 1/3 the size.

Actually if you don't mind a lighter rig, you could just use a 90whr Li-Ion battery instead of the Hytron140, then you should be able to get it in balance without the weightplate. Depends on the weightrange of the arm of cause.

In the photos the gimbal is very close to the camera, which implies that you can actually strip weight from the camera to be able to lower the gimbal a bit.

The operatior is my friend Mario- it was his crazy idea from previous shoots to use the block. He is planning on making it steel, and of course, lighter. One interesting thing is the block has tapped holes for mounting a remote motor directly to the block, reaching up to your DV cam eliminating rods. We don't need that of course.

The rig isn't really that heavy, Mario is used to 35mm and such, so the rig is actually light for him.

As for the CAVISION mattebox- you get what you pay for. It's not a Chrosiel, but it does the job. I had to remove a piece and flip a piece on the rod support to lower it- it does not have an adjustment for this. One nice thing it has is a rotating tray- a must for polas. I don't think the indie is the way to go as it clips to the actual lens.
