HVX/M2 35mm adapter Footage

It seemed like the steadyshot was messing with it a little bit... some of the stationary shots were jumping around some.

Other than that, and the fact that you desperately need a smoother tripod head, it looked great.
 
Thank you Matthewkern.. The steadyshot is off, it's the head.. There's almost no resistance, so the slightest bump or move is jiggly..

How do you guys get away with filming in public like that? I was filming some trains in Sydney for a music video the other day and someone reported me on the terrorist hot line. Before I new it I was almost arrested.

hahaha, wow.. Well I did get stopped by one off duty police officer who was really nice, and said don't worry about it.. So I was just lucky.. The HVX with the M2 and a lens does look a lot like a missle launcher..

I think the footage looks great, I wish I had a Reason to buy the M2 or RedRock, or something. How are the lens you are using, I wonder what a good $30,000+ lens would look like:) Are you using still camera lenses or film lens.

Why has nobody gotten the PL mount M2 so they can use the Arri lenses?

I loved the picture quality and the colors in your HVX + M2 test. I think composition also had a lot to do with making those shots interesting.

I was thinking about upgrading my DVX package to HD. I loved the color reproduction in my DVX100a but I was looking for a more ENG style camera for more handheld work. I learned to shoot on a Arris SRII, hence my prejudice; I just feel more comfortable with the camera on my shoulder if it's not on a steadicam.

So my research brought me to the JVC HD100/HD250... but the CA and breathing on their stock lens was sort of a turn off. I saw a lot of good tests but the images that I liked looked very doctored in post.

So, I was wondering what your images went through in post (did you crunch the blacks or anything of the sort- outside the aforementioned upping brightness). From what I saw, it looked like footage pretty much out of the camera.

Also, I know that shooting with a 300mm lens handheld is difficult enough even if it was on an Arri SRII but with the shorter lenses and the M2 adapter, do you think it'd be a feasible task to use the setup hand held? I was thinking with the M2 FF and a DVRig Pro or something.

Also, what recording format did you use? Especially for something like time lapse, I imagine you wouldn't be able to do that on a P2 card. (Well maybe hot swapping while dumping the footage.) Or was it just recorded directly onto a lap top?

At first, I was turned off by the the P2 method of image aquisition but I guess I can look at it like a 500 ft roll or something.

Lastly, how is the editing process with the HVX? With JVC's HDV format, my Avid Pro is no good. I would have to get a new computer and get Adobe Premiere Pro with Aspect HD. There is no easy solution for HDV (at 24p I mean) right now... For this last question, I'm sure I can explore this site for further information if you are busy. But I would like to get your first hand impressions for the other questions from someone who's tested the HVX + M2 solution when you have the time to.

I'm shooting a feature starting the 7th (if we dont get hit by a hurricane) with Zeiss Superspeeds (T1.3). We just shot a test today, and, well, everyone just about creamed their pants.. ;-)

This was shot with Nikon Lenses though...

For this I was not.. But I am NOW!! and it's the ONLY WAY!! I don't know why they dont ship it to be hard mounted! It solves ALL the problems...

You can make the HVX handheld comfortable.. It just takes some setup...

Eh... Get the HVX! No 1080 with the JVC (not that I ever shoot 1080) But at least I CAN!!!!

I crushed the blacks a bit, and upped the saturation a smidge (just a smidge, the HVX looks great w/o any adjustments..)

The 300 Nikon is small, it's just when you are in TIGHT, any slight movement is magnified!

Everything was done with the P2 card.. Slomotion (undercranking) takes up MUCH less space.. It's just like shooting film.. HIGHSPEED (overcranking) takes up MORE space.. Just like film.......

If you shoot 720pN, think of it as a 1900' roll (about 20 min of footage)

P2 = THE BEST in the edit process! It's not realtime like HDV, and there are 0 dropouts (that I know of).. The best editing programs support it, and their are NO major problems that I know of.. When using the M2, you just have to render your 180 degree flip.. All I can say is GET IT!!

Thanks Justin, I shot-gunned you with questions hoping that you might get hit by at least one of them (although they were all questions- and answers- that were important for me) but going and breaking down each question: how can a guy ask for more? Please, do not apologize for grammatical errors- it's already too much that you'd answer this zonked after a makeup test all day. For most guys, that would mean: home + beer + bed. (I can't begin to imagine how hot it must have been down there today.)

Appreciate your feedback as I'm sure we all are. I've followed your other threads and it's safe to say that your generosity with your time and sharing your experience is not a fluke.

A friend of mine was taking photos in DC a block away from the smithsonian, and 10 minutes later a black suv with sirens pulls up next to him asks him for his film.

Its sad that there will always be bad apples that ruin it for the masses.

Even more of a reason to get the HVX!!! Always have a tape inside the camera, and make sure you give them the tape (even though you put everything on the P2).... hehhehe
 
Awesome stuff. It makes me want to cry that I got the DXV instead.

Did the girl in th bikini know you were filming her?
 
Hahahaha, that slow motion of that kid falling through the air and then winking in mid flight was hilarious! Great footage, etc. You know how it goes...

I can't imagine what I would do to the officer from homeland security if he were smart enough to try and take my p2 card.... those things cost major $$$.
