HVX first impressions..

k,

before viewing its very impotant to note that the images are somewhat blocky due to the raylight codec not being braodcast quality yet. normally these images would look alot cripser and more detailed as in the LCD when using focus assist viewing a near pixel for pixel image of what im shooting using the given format. looks fabulous.

some updated pics from our little trip out of town yesterday here:

http://www.rowecine.com/HVX/

the footage is transcoding now to WMV HD in 1080 24p. ill make a smaller version as well later for slower machines. should be up later today.

1080 24p WMV is now online. i have to give a big tip of the hat to Barry Green for loaning me a P2 card since nobody had one in stock outside of the packages to sell me right away. definitely going to get one of them asap.

anyway ..nothing fancy. just shooting every now and then on the road on the way to our destination yesterday and such trying to get high contrast scenes and some motion and such. anyway, alot could be said/discussed about the simple footage in it, but i dont think noise is an issue worth talking about at all.

Thanks Neil for that, most of the footage taken was from still recording. It good to see more moving subject.

How hard is to take a stable image like with the horses ?

everything was shot handheld. the horse stuff was just shot out the window when we pulled over for a sec. elbows into chest. sometimes theres a little more time to find a comfy and stable position.. sometimes not. ..you know the drill. anyhow, as far as easy or hard ..its entirely up to the cinematographers abilities.

im going to try to have the smaller WMV up asap tonight. and im working on getting something cinematic shot asap as well.

Neil,

This footage and the desert one, reminds me of the reason I switched from buying the DVX100B to the HVX, absolutely great "feeling" in the picture very filmic I would say and considering it was quickly shot, all I can say is wow!

Thanks for making the "european" waiting a little easier...

I've notice a LOT of purple frigging, the same problem of Xl H1 lens...and can you give us bmp or a tiff without all blocky pixels...? Thanks a lot :)

the blocky stuff is due to the raylight demo not bieng up to sbff yet.. its being worked on and may be fixed already. Barry Green is checking into it. as far as purple fringing.. im just not seeing it. ive noticed a little bit of a fringe on a couple of objects, mainy the edge of thedark bridge embankments against the really bright sky(near overexposure), but as far as treelines and other normal objects in normal exposure, i really dont see it at all.

its no more noisy than the DVX. if you want to shoot in the dark ...use nightvision. ..if you want to shoot a film.. even if its a dark scene.. do it the right way.. shoot it brighter and darken in post. but again.. its no more noisy than the DVX.

.. imho if your having noise issues, its your fault and not the cameras. after all it is a LIGHT recording device.. you need to give it something real to work with.

Thanks for the info. Many of us were hoping that it would be less noisy than the DVX, but at least it isn't worse. As for noise issues, those of us with 1/2" cameras have been used to less noise than the DVX...

ive found that using the HVX in the USB 2.0 mode is easier than the firewire mode for computer connection since its faster and plug and play responsive.

Wow, I'll be interested in hearing more. USB generally sucks for video, since it sends it in buckets versus the continuous stream of firewire...

On a PC, the USB port is "guaranteed" to work. The firewire port is not "guaranteed". On the Mac it's the opposite: the firewire port is "guaranteed", and the USB port is not.

I have had it work to transfer files using firewire on the PC, but it definitely works better with the USB port.

Note: this has nothing to do with firewire streaming; that always happens exclusively through the firewire of course. We're talking about using the camera as an external P2 card reader on a computer.

All you guys that are using the HVX200 and USB as a P2 card reader , have all of you upgraded to Service Pack 2 in Windows XP. And should I use the utility software disc that came with the camera or should I go to Panasonic's web site for the latest USB_P2 software.

I didn't see much either. Danilo is a nice enough guy but he calls the HVX a "web cam"!!

ill ditto barry on the USB vs firewire thing. ive done it both ways, but the camera was picked up and the process was smoother over USB 2.0.

jazzx-

i completely agree, the stuff from this cam really does look and feel like film. I beleive it looks even more filmic than the DVX.. more dynamic range.. better colr resolution.. more detailed ect. and with the high res.. it can replace it if used right.

anyhow, im ulling the WMV HD clip since i dont want to get in trouble with my web host by exceeding the 10GB a day limit again. I'll post a smaller version tommorow. ..working on a dramatic shoot to really try to show what the cam can do rather than this run+ gun stuffs.

I would beh happy to host those files

I am uploading HVX raylight test 1 1080 24p.wmv to http://hvx200.moctel.com/ rightnow. I will create a folder as your name. If there is a problem with that, please let me know. But I really like the hi-res content. I can create a FTP upload user password so you can upload your files directly into that folder.

Let me know. Thanks

? ...didnt you already upload it? the file you stated you were uploading above is full 1920x1080 24p. let me know, ive got some stuff uploading right now to my site that will be running for a couple hours or so.

Sorry, I ment OTHER HIGH RES content you might do after this one ;)
I have already uploaded the one you have made.

Neil, I believe you shot that WMV, if you did that was awesome and I thank you for giving me that sweet experience. Finally !!! someone shot some pretty things to look out. I was sold on this camera six months ago and this footage makes me happy that I'm buying this thing. It produces amazing pictures and color and I can't wait to start shooting like a madman with it - Thanks Neil, awesome footage
