HVX, FCP6, and iMovie: Print to Video

Hello All:

I was googling and searching the forums for a specific answer, but I couldn't find exactly what I needed to end my current state of confusion. So I thought I would ask. :-)

I normally shoot on the HVX at 720p24. No big problems here. Recently, however, I needed to bounce a project down to letterboxed miniDV (4:3). I wasn't panicked because I knew it was possible and should be easy and straight-forward. However, in trying to do so, I came across a problem I just do not know how to solve.

In FCP, I created a new 4x3 sequence and dropped my original 16x9 clips into this sequence. FCP dutifully letterboxed them and, after rendering, I was able to get everything perfect in the NLE.

Then I turned my attention to Print to Video. I hooked up the HVX in VCR mode via Firewire and checked my Print to Video output settings in FCP. Everything looked ok. I tried to the PtV command. The HVX responded, and the clip printed. However, only the audio bounced down to tape. The video did not.

I tried many settings. I tried another miniDV camera. Same deal.

I then exported the sequence to a QT file, and then imported that file into iMovie (old). I hooked the HVX back up to firewire and then SUCCESSFULLY exported the sequence, audio and letterboxed video, to the HVX from iMovie (old).

So...I have a work-around. I am not panicked.

However, I think this has to be totally unnecessary. If iMovie can export the sequence to the HVX miniDV successfully, surely FCP6 should be able to. However, no amount of tweaking FCP settings seems to work for me.

I'd like to know if anyone else has solved this before.

Thank you!

The workaround is unnecessary, you can go out directly. You probably have to match the FCP output settings to the camera recording mode; you may have had the camera in a mode other than DV?

Well, either camera (HVX and a old consumer Sony Handycam) works with iMovie perfectly, as I said. Both are in DV mode as far as I know.

As I said, I am very confused, especially when I went back and pulled up some HDV-based projects and I was able to dump them to the HVX DV with (surprise!) no problems. It just appears that I cannot get 720p24 video captured on P2, logged into FCP, converted to an NTSC sequence in FCP, and then Printed to Video to work...

I am looking for "the answer": aka set FCP to XXX, set camera to YYY, Print to Video.

Thanks.
