HVX+FCP 5.1.2 Import Problems

Okay guys + gals,

Here's the deal. I was on a shoot today importing 720p into final cut. All of my shots were at 24p but for some reason when FCP 5.1.2 imported them into the newer version some of (not all of them) would import at different frame rates such as 6fsp, 8fps and weirdly enough 12.99 fps. I know this sounds impossible because the HVX can't even shoot those frame rates (unless you use the hack, other than 12.99(wtf)). Luckily I backed up all the P2's (which I first started doing today), because I tried various times to import them again but nothing worked. The weird thing was that they played fine in the viewer before I imported them. I was completely freaked out! Then I thought to myself, hey I just updated this FCP the other night so immediately I thought it was a bug with the new version. Thankfully after a lot of stressing out, I deleted the newer version from my powerbook 1.0gh and reinstalled 5.1 an everything imported fine. Hope they fix this soon! Moral of the story...please make sure to back up your P2's! Has anyone else experienced this yet?

I've been importing tons of stuff with 5.1.2 with no problems. Haven't a clue as to what would cause that problem. Where are you seeing these frame rates reported?

This is the first time I've imported using 5.1.2 nd yes this happened to me. Exact same as Prodigi descirbes. I shot 30 min of intevriew at 720p24pN over 2 8G cards. The second card was fine but the first mxf file from card 1 played at 19.98 or some such crazy thing. Plays in the viewer fine. Chalk up another heart attack for me too. They better fix this ASAP!!

Ok, no body is giving any details here. Where do you see these frame rates being reported? Playback in the P2 Import window can be choppy. In the Viewer, it should be nice and smooth, if you set up your project properly.

jgrimson, where did you see a frame rate of 19.98 reported?

Of you were to have mounted the two cards together, in the camera, FCP 5.1.2 would span them into one full length clip.

Could it be because of two cards?

I only have 1 P2 card, but in the future maybe as advice , i always let whoever we are shooting or whatever we are shooting know that we are there and need to be made aware of and could possibly need to stop the shoot for any technical reason. They understand, because without the cameras, theres no reason for them to be doin what they are doin. Cameras are just as important as the subject you are shooting, dont be hesitant to let them know the footage is important and to take precautions you may need to interupt once or twice.

You see the frame rate in the FCP browser after it's imported. The duration reads incorrect as well since it is confused. Since this was one continuos 30min take spanning 2 8G P2 crds I' not sure if there is any other way to import the footage. It shows incomplete clips in the P2 import window. I've tried to import from P2 folders that I transfered to my drive but it only sees one card at a time. I attempted to import from the camera with both cards mounted, in which case it does see it as one continuos file. The problem I see here is when you're mounting cards one at a time on location you're gonna be screwed

Possible Workaround

Possible Workaround

I'm having this problem as well - and yes it started after upgrading to FCP 5.12. Basically everything plays great in the P2 import window, but when the affected clips get into FCP the frame rate changes to an something like 11.98, or 9.98 it's random.

I was able to work around this by adding a scene name to the clip - in the P2 Import Window. Then selecting "Add Clip to Queue." I tried this once and it worked.

If you check around you'll see that the FCP upgrade is causing problems for others using other formats. I'd imagine (hope) that Apple will address this soon.

Ben:

Same thing happened to me.

Footage was shot at 720/24pn

I imported it into a 24p sequence. Clips were imported and reported that they were 29.97 in the browser. When dragged into the sequence, they had to be rendered.

UPDATE: USER ERRORS.

I rechecked my log and it was shot at 720/30pn.

I apologize.

Anybody know how to backtrack to 5.1.1? I'm really in a bind now with this problem and can't find an archive section on Apple's site for previous release versions. I want to uninstall FCP reinstall from my 5.1 DVD and then upgrade to 5.1.1 I don't know how to do it.

I have a relatively new HVX-200 and have been shooting in 720p24N and ingesting with FCP 5.1.2 without incident. So there maybe something going on with your camera or your P2 cards. When did you get your HVX-200, was it from the first run of them?
Also, something that would be interesting to try is to turn off the preference that removes duplicate frames during ingest, its possible that FCP is removing too many frames when it doesn't have to.

Good luck! b

Are you sure you applied the pulldown when you ingested the footage from your P2 cards? I am trying to duplicate this on my system, and am unable to. I'd suggest going over every detail of your camera and P2 Import window and Sequence settings. I don't know of any reported bugs that do what you discribe.

BenB, I understand that you are not having this problem, but it this is a legimate problem. This is not the only forum on the web where people are reporting these errors.

I did not have a problem with 5.1 - and I shoot 90% of my footage at 720/24np. This problem occurred once I upgraded to 5.1.2. I saw it on the first import into 5.1.2. The project I was importing into is one that has been going on since the Summer. My settings on the camera have not changed. And I was very careful to make sure that FCP had the same settings once I upgraded.

It's frustrating because there seems to be no ryhme or reason for why it happens . I posted one work around earlier during this thread. I wonder how many have tried it and what their outcome was?

I beleive the problem is in the "remove advance pulldown frames" check box. It is fairly buried and for some reason defaults to "ON". I unchecked the box and my footage came in properly. So my comments are:

  1. The software should default to that check box being off.
  2. Better than that it should ignore footage that wasn't shot with pull down frames, in which case defaulting to on would transparently remove frames when footage needs it and ignore Native footage. So this I believe is the bug.
