HVX Europe availability

- why DVCPRO25 cannot be recorded on MiniDV?
Because DVCPRO25 is a SMPTE-codified format that specifies metal-particle tape, and miniDV tape isn't metal particle.

Besides, the data stream is identical. You can do a bit-for-bit identical firewire transfer from miniDV to DVCPRO25, and back. So there's pretty much no point in trying to record DVCPRO25 on miniDV tape, because what you would end up with is miniDV. They're bitstream identical.

(well, except in PAL where it's 4:1:1 vs. 4:2:0...)

ok Robert,
- prices
- batterylife

and i will play "dumb" and try to get all the other info re-confirmed ;-)

No big news for PAL users. I saw the HVX (as the typical prototype) today in munich. it is fat and heavy (2,5kg at least). i got the following info:
- it will not be switchable PAL-NTSC (i had to ask that hehe)
- the buttons are all bigger. it actually has a toy-look to me. why the cam is so big now is a mystery when you think how slim the JVC is even with a tapedrive in there.
- there is a cool small button at the back to allow immediate P2 access. that will be such a cool feature to immediately view shots.
- 12 framrates, but they do not know exactly what they will be. the rep said he would not expect them to start as low as 4 fps, but rather 12fps to 50 fps
- the decision about the non-bundling of the camera will be out in december, as also the final prices will be out as soon as the 8GB P2 will actually be available and priced. he saidf though, he could not imagine to stick with the bundle-only policy, because the US sells it without P2 (thanks JAN)!
- batterylife: he was laughing at me and asked who invented the rumour of an overconsumption. after all nobody ever held a final HVX in his hands. from their experience with P2 cams the batterylife increases by 30% in P2 mode as opposed to tapemode.
- Focus (Firestore) are ready as soon as the HVX is out to end development and ship the new device
- they are sure there will be add-on lenses (wide and tele), but no idea when, by who for what price
- the hope the cam will ship to dealers by mid-february. dealers are now buying huge stocks, as there seems an incredible demand already!!

i could not see any decent footage though. they only had a small screen for display of life footage. SONY definitely knows how to sell their cams in that regard: big screens and showing HDCam footage in a HDV booth ...jerks

of course i also ran into someone who claimed 720p is a US standard only, because the Americans where so happy to go from 480v to 720v, while in Europe that is "no considerable improvement from 576v". i did not argue, cos i simply didn´t wanna get stuck for an hour at a SONY rep.

I was at a HVX presentation a couple of days ago as well.

The Pana people said that they strongly believe the cam will be sold unbundled as well. I guessed that the price without P2 cards will be somewhere between 5000,- and 6000,- Euros. Unfortunately, they said that they believe so, too.
It think you'll have to pay at least 5999,- Euros including VAT here in Germany.

Oh well, I'll go for the DVX100BE.

I hope it will finally go like this and I could also buy that HVX from Germany, usually you have better prices there. Thanks for the info, Oli. :)

and taxes in Germany will rise from 16% up to 19% in january - Good news for foreign buyers who like shopping in Germany :) (as we'll get the 19% money back...)

yes, and there is quite some competition now.
the show i attended also had the SONY and JVC HDVs next to the HVX (which was in a corner somehow). you could get the SONYs for 3300 and 6300 fully equipped (batteries, tapes, wideangle etc) and the JVC from 9300 with a HDV deck.
So PAna will have to put their cam somewhere between 6.300 and 10.000 "operationable".

Tax will rise not before January 2007.
So enough time to go and buy a HVX
