HVX > DV Rack HD ... no image! Help!

Hi all,

I just purchased DV Rack HD 2. Now I'm simply trying to connect the HVX200 to DV Rack and see an image show up on the DV Rack monitor. So far no luck. What mode is the camera supposed to be in for use with DV Rack? And should I should be making the connection via firewire or USB (I presume firewire)?

Any guidance with intial setup would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

Firewire is the connection.

Go to 'Devices' in the HDVRack Menu and you should see your Panasonic listed there.

Click it and you should get your image on the screen.,

(Remove lens cap before doing all the above) ;-)

Anything that's not native (PN) will work with DV Rack HD.

Can you record anything and it just doesn't display, or does DV Rack not see the camera? You can only use a Firewire connection with DV Rack, and the camera must be in IEEE 1394 mode.

I thought with the new firmware for the HVX that the Firewire output in all modes.

(I have not tested it though with either DVRack or the Firestore)

How do you put the camera in 1394 mode? Forgive the remedial question, but I've only had the camera a short time.

Thanks, Shooter. Your advice to go to Devices was the answer. Only problem now is that my 1080i/24pa footage shows up "squeezed." Anybody encounter that before?

Also, just to make sure I'm properly set up, the camera should be in camera mode, with the media selector set to P2 mode, correct?

Great camera, but damn, it's a complicated one to learn. Makes my old VX2000 seem like a toy.

Manual/Other Functions -> Pc Mode -> 1394device

Seriously, download the latest pdf operations manual for the HVX200 and put it on your desktop.

Open it and use the search function.

Get to know how it is organized. It's far better to start there, and absorb the manual and then come here with questions.

By using the manual first, you learn additional information in the process.

The "squeezed" appearance of your footage, does not matter because it is ok,
Windows media player shows footage "squeezed", you need to put it in your NLE or process trough Cineform's Aspect HD or Raylight in order to "see" it right.

I recommend Cineform (wich is the "defacto" plugin for my cinema work), because it lets you edit HD, DVCPro 100 at full res in a normal Computer, laptop or desktop.

Greetings

David, appreciate the help. For what it's worth, I've read most of the Panasonic manual and find it not terribly useful in some circumstances--not surprising for a manufacturer's manual, of course. I asked about 1394 mode because I only saw reference to 1394 Device and 1394 Host in the camera and in the manual. And while it seemed fairly obvious that 1394 Device was the correct setting, the post above didn't reference it as such and so I wondered if there was some other setting, burried in the menus, that I didn't know about.

I do try to answer my own questions. But when it comes to a choice between 10-15 minutes of digging around in hopes of an answer vs. asking here and hoping someone can clear things with 5-10 seconds of effort ... well, that would seem to be one of the reasons why these boards exist.

With that said, thanks to everyone for their help. Much appreciated and I hope to return the favor to the next generation of HVX newbies....

This is not true, the image in the two virtual monitors should not be squeezed. Press the menu button on one of the virtual monitors and go through all of the selections, there should be something in there that should fix that.

Returning to this issue : I am wondering how the Firestore FS100 is now able to record PN modes if the FW does not output PN.

I guess .. why search if someone else will do it for you

a SIMPLE Google search turned up this :

"Native file format support only records the required frames in a DVCPRO HD stream eliminating the need to remove advanced pulldown or duplicate frames during import to the edit system."

"While camcorders such as the Panasonic AG-HVX200 P2 camera/recorder do not output a stream via FireWire when set to native frame modes (pN), the FS-100 processor is capable of achieving the same native support by only recording the required frames when set to regular 720/24p, 25p and 30p modes."

Another search form DVXUSERS:

DVRack can also remove the duplicate frames if you want.

If you set "DV File Format" to "AVI T2", then duplicate frames are recorded; if you set it to "AVI T1", the duplicate frames are discarded and you wind up with what is essentially a PN AVI file.

Before you try to incorporate this into your workflow, make sure your NLE supports this and doesn't try to do pulldown processing for it.

A simple search of the outdated info does not offer much as a response but the latest info is different and specifically mentions the PN modes

Quote New Info

It still maybe fact that the HVX200 can not output N modes thru the firewire but I wonder how the Camera and the FS100 would be setup for the FS to know the shooting framerate considering you need to be in an N mode to be able to change them.

Im sorry, but you are mistaken. The fact that the FS-100 does the stripping of dupliacate frames to achieve the equivalent of the PN mode is not outdated info.

Again, Im sorry, maybe things are different in the part of the world you live in, but then NTSC version of the camera does NOT have to be in an "N" mode to be able to change framerates.

I didnt/dont want to get in to a p*ssing match with out about it, and I apologize to you if it seemed that way.

This is the line that confuse me and it comes direct from the Latest Focus Enhancemnt Link (that they sent to me yesterday). Note that it differs from the original info you used. The word "eliminating" is key to my confusion.

Whatever....it still seems that PN modes can not be used via FW from the HVX and that was what I originally questioned based on my confusion about how FStores handled ort created PN mxf data.

I don't see what the problem is, you set the camera to a non-native mode, and the FS-100 to record native -- the end results is the same. And as mentioned previously, DV Rack will do this as well.
