I dont have a hvx, but a friend does and i wanted a clip from him so he sent it so i could mess with it. vegas reads it as like 8 audio tracks. quicklime doesn't even play it, it just plays black.

any ideas?
im on windows xp

HVX records MXF files which Quicktime won't play, in fact, Final Cut has to rewrap the MXF as a QT file just to be able to edit it. Welcome to the world of the HVX.
(if you know someone with Final Cut Pro, Raylight , or Edius Broadcast they can convert it for you.

Actually, does shooting to a firestore require the same method to get the files to work? I was under the impression that the firestores can record numerous file types, possibly something that works with vegas or premiere?

It can record in different container formats, but the underlying codec is still the same, so without DVCProHD support you are up the creek. Having said that, not having the FS-100 record in QuickTime format and sticking with the industry-standard MXF format increases compatibility and allows other systems like Avid and Premiere CS3 work with the clips.

You can also use Adobe OnLocation to shoot; it will record the footage as AVIs that Vegas can use if the OnLocation codecs are installed on that machine.

This, of course, ties you to a laptop and it doesn't work with the pN modes, because the HVX doesn't stream those over firewire.
