HVX being used for the Olympics!

Someone in the UK sent me this news clipping. If you want to see some HVX200 footage, all you have to do is tune in to this year's biggest sports production! The BBC is using HVX's with P2 cards for all their ENG coverage of the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics.

I think the HVX is they ONLY DVCProHD capable P2 camera at the moment. Which they discuss both as in use, so it HAS to be that. Or some NEW camera that we don't know about yet.

The plot thickens.

I'm glad to hear that other people are starting to realize the potential of this camera.

Sweeeeet! :) That must make things so much easier for their small teams, to have instant access to footage for beaming via satellite.

I'm going to check this out...

So they're using PRO50.

Might be able to find out more, couple of colleagues work in BBC sport.

Even the fastest communications with satellites cannot handle the bandwidth required for transfering DVCPro50 or 100 (or it can - it will just take a very long time).

greg, wait a minute... satellite communications are VERY FAST... just extreamly expensive and slow response time.
Think of Digital Satellite TV, every channel take about 5Mbits/sec, at about 400 channel.
So it can transfer 2000Mbits/sec atless.
Now having a 133Mbits/sec dedicated link is expensive, even at DVCPRO 50, it might need 70Mbits/sec, still expensive.

Now TV station send satellite live broadcast all the time. Im sure they use Digital Betacam stream. Digital Betacam is 90Mbits/sec, so it even cheaper to send DVCPRO 50 than sending Digital Betacam footage.

There is the HDX400 2/3" 3-CCD 16:9 1080i DVCPRO HD Camcorder that uses P2. I suppose they could be using these instead for their test run.

But it could very well be the HVX as the article states that the camera can switch between DVCPROHD, DVCPRO50, and DVCPRO25 ...

I don't think the HDX400 can do that ...

AS I comented a few posts back..

BBC is PAL.

did they get an HVX200 PAL version allready? Otherwise it would have to be another camera (Obviously)

From what I understand, it only a firmware difference between the PAL and NTSC version. Would be kinda 'stupid' to be using parts that dont support both frequency

I would be very suprised if the BBC were using NTSC HVX200's. They would be of virtually no use in normal broadcast situations.

The PAL version is not out for another 6-8 weeks. Plus it being sport, I doubt they would use progressive, and then of course the problem would be 60i instead of 50.

My guess is they're using SPX800s. It mentions DVCPROHD in the explanation of the P2 system, but it says they are operating DVCPRO50 cameras and I would be surprised if they have a whole fleet of PAL HVXs available to them yet. I know they used the SPX in the last olympic games as well, so it'd make sense. Either way, it's definitely a step in the right direction for P2! :)

BBC is working with 3 ENG teams with ± 3 cams, I dont think they are responsible for the shorts in delivery, and it is PAL so or they test a new HVX PAL (you dont do that in a heavy production surrounding, do you?) or it is a SPX800.

BTW: Panasonic is sponsor for the Torino Olympic Broadcasting Organization with P2, 100 cams, lcd screens, 8.800 tv sets and monitors.

I was told they were using the HVX. Obviously that would imply a prerelease version of the 50hz/PAL model I guess. Don't know for sure, but I was told by the UK guy that they were using HVX's, and the article mentions HD. They may have some SPX's too for all I know, but they're definitely using HVX's.
