hvx and onlocation cs3 issue

I have had onlocation for over a year but I've never had the need to use it until now when I'll be doing a multi-cam shoot and won't have enough p2 cards.

I plug my camera in via firewire at 720 60p and open onlocation. when I hit the menu button on the onlocation screen I see the options for dv as either avi or something else (not in front of computer now) or hdv as either mpeg or m2t. I want to record dvcprohd but I don't see the option there.

I did a 2 hour test shoot using the mpeg setting which was about 42gb. I ejected it from onlocation and threw it in a 720 60p premiere project. The video is extremely squeezed width-wise.

When I open the file up in quicktime it is 16:9. Premiere shows the file as 960X720.

Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

Sounds like your project just isn't interpreting the footage correctly.

In Premiere in your assets, right click the clip and select Interpret Footage. Now in the new window that pops up in the "Pixel Aspect Ratio" area put the bullet in "Conform to". Now in the drop down box of "Conform to" select "DVCPRO HD (1.5)". Hit ok, and you should be ready to rock and roll.

Thanks Nick, I'll give it a shot. Question-I know I'm recording hd but is it the hdv codec? I looked through the manual and it says that onlocation can record dvcprohd but I can't find the menu setting for it.

It records DVCPRO HD in an AVI, but it will only support the split file format, which means it'll make two files, one that is video, and one that is audio. With this you just need to import both files, and stick them in a timeline together...

The other option is Quicktime recording which puts the DVCPRO HD stream in a quicktime wrapper....in other words it's still your exact footage, but it's in an easy to use .mov file.

You choose which to use...

As for HDV recording, OnLocation does not support the recording of HDV with a camera that doesn't already support it....so with a 170/200 it isn't even possible to accidentally record anything but the good stuff with OnLocation

Oh and you set all this up in the field monitor...hit the menu button in the field monitor and the recording format should be the first option.

awesome that cleared up a lot. Thank you very much.

so even though I'm not seeing an option for DVCPROHD I'm fine, right?

Yep, you're cool....I use the exact same setup and have done tests, and atleast on mine it's all Kosher.

I of course would suggest doing intensive tests to not only get used to the file format, but the image delay, using the different tools in OnLocation, importing footage, as well as the physical side of things.....test your cables while filming. Giggle them around, find weak spot, perhaps find some solutions to keeping everything sturdy.

I've actually used rubber bands(the large medical kind) on my firewire cable so that I could keep them firmly in the HVX and the computer.....but nothing can help you if the cable just sucks, lol.

I might have to pick that up! lol!

That combined with the rubber band trick would ensure the cable wouldn't jiggle, joggle, giggle(any more words with ggle?).
