HVX 200 Workflow Clarification with p2 cards ?

Clarification on this.

I've been reading and doing my research on the workflow using an external hard drive and a 4 or 8 Gb p2 card.

Is it true that you can record DVCPro50 or 100 to a 4/8 Gb P2 card, and then attach a firewire drive to the camera and offload the footage?

then wipe the card and do it again.

Is this correct? Anybody have guidance on how long the download is?

Re: workflow question

yes you can do this, it will be a major part of the workflow. The transfer is sopposed to take a minute a GB, depending on your connection, usb or firewire.

The transfer from P2 in camera can only be done via firewire. No usb.

However if you have laptop you could offload through that to a USB drive.

I know you can stick a P2 in an Apple Powerbook but has anybody actually done this with a windows laptop?

Yes I've done it in a windows laptop.

And the offload speed depends on the speed of your hard disk. The faster the hard disk, the faster the offloading. The P2 card runs at 80 megabytes per second, the firewire bus runs at 50 megabytes per second, but most hard disks run at around 25 megabytes per second. So the hard disk is the bottleneck. Get a faster hard disk and you'll offload faster. Theoretically, with a 50-megabyte-per-second hard disk (minimum sustained transfer rate), you should be able to offload a 4gb P2 card in as little as about 90 seconds.

I don't think you can.

PCMCIA is not a standard feature for Apple.

The way you use an Apple Powerbook and the HVX as it has been discussed earlier is to dump your P2 card contents onto a powerbook via the Firewire. Or some variation of this involving P2 store, CP-2, or an external HD. However you can not just put a P2 into a Powerbook.

All Apple powerbooks except for the 12" have a PCMCIA card slot. iBooks however do not have those slots.

I've seen 'em do it. So yes, you definitely can.

I think iBooks don't have PCMCIA slots, but all PowerBooks do, don't they?

It requires a software driver that comes free with the HVX in order to make it work, but it definitely works.

Again, what do you do?

Do you plug a 2.5 inch portable bus powered HD into the camera, and then how does the download occur?

Or is there a firewire reader available that you can plug the P2 card into, perhaps using some adapter, have it mount on the desktop of a PB or something else, and then copy over?

I think you should at least read the FAQ page:

I've read those. I know you can plug the firewire drive into the camera.

But I'm asking how the transfer occurs.

Is there control or something else that governs how it occurs.

I'm pretty resourceful, and appreciate your comment, but I started from the FAQ page and then came here

I believe its the "host mode" built into the camera that allows you to take the footage from the P2 card and transfer it via firewire. This is where you should also be able to view the clips on your P2 and delete them.

I'm sure someone will correct me in a minute or two if i'm wrong.

There's a special host mode (as The Machinist said) that you go into. In host mode, it can see and control an external 1394 drive. There are a few commands, such as "format disk" and "copy slot 1" and "copy slot 2", etc. So you put it in host mode, and it'll detect your attached drive. Then you go into the menu and format the drive (if you haven't formatted it before for use with the HVX). Then you just tell it to copy either slot 1 or slot 2, and you can tell it to do so with or without verify mode (with verify, it'll copy the card contents over, and then it'll read the data back and compare it to the card to make sure that it absolutely successfully copied over).

Oh that is so sweet.

What if you already have stuff on the drive you want to keep (don't want to format) can you just add new stuff to the drive without removing the old?

I checked some (standard) PC shops in the Netherlands and a HDD with IEEE connection is not available. Does anyone living in The Netherlands knows where to buy this stuff. Which one suites best (brand, raid ........, size, speed etc.). Any price indication ?????
