hvx-200 viewed as HDV or HD by broadcasters?

I'm about to start the process of confirming acquisition on the HVX200 for HD broadcast (PBS/Discovery/DiscoveryHD etc). I've read the producers guides and they state that no more than ~15-30% of a project can be HDV. So here is my question is the HVX viewed as a HDV, or HD camera? If I shoot 1080p will they accept it as HD?

I know the only really place to find this out is directly from the stations, however has anyone else done any research?

HDV is a format that complies with the HD standard.

DVCProHD (which is what the HVX records in) is also a format that
complies with the HD standard.

I would ask the various stations if the DVCProHD codec is acceptable acquisition for their HD broadcast and if so, to what percentage of the program? Also, what delivery format will they want it on? You may need to upconvert to HDCAM tapes or something like that.

We were told that if we're shooting HD, to use HDCAM or DVCPROHD, and NOT to shoot anything on HDV. This was for acquisition, not just delivery.

You think they can tell the difference between something originated on HDV and just exported in DVCProHD from FCP compared to HVX material shot straight on DVCProHD? This of course only goes for certain kinds of shots that don't include fast motion or overcranking :)

Just don't show them the making-of pictures :D

HDV has terribly high compression and its artifacts are readily visible -- anyone who deals with a lot of footage will know immediately than an HDV camera was used.

Better to shoot on a cheap camera that captures to DVCPROHD in the first place -- then you'll have a better chance of fooling them!

VHS is SD, but so is Beta SP.
HDV is High Def, but so is DVCPro 100.
Get my drift?
JMHO. :)

We are shooting DVCPRO HD with the Varicam and the HVX, and the History Channel has cleared us to use both cameras. But we had to submit test footage for them to scrutinize first. And they have said flat out that they will not accept HDV in any form.

But simple answer...no, DVCPRO HD is not HDV...and the HVX shoots DVCPRO HD.

So the HVX is DVCPro HD, and that is not HDV. I'm still going to make sure to get the ok from the channel before I invest the money in the HVX.

So people are using the HVX for HD broadcast where they don't allow HDV?

Thanks.

Correct.

Yeah, might be a good idea. Or just buy the HVX, shoot, edit, deliver. Since it is DVCProHD originated, they probably won't even raise an eyebrow.

Yes. I would simply tell the stations that you are acquiring HD content in the DVCProHD codec. I bet you'll get the greenlight everytime.

HDV the 'VHS' of HD? .. heh heh heh...
My sentiments exactly! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) Although . . . even lower quality HD is on its way . . .

This is what I did on a recent proposal -- and nobody even blinked at it yet. I'll be shooting a pilot on the HVX, and will see how easily that footage can be passed-off as 2/3 footage.
