HVX 200 first price in Germany

Just got word from a "premium Panasonic" dealer in Germany that the HVX 200 is going to cost some 8100 € including 2 P2 cards with 4 GB and incl. 16% so called added value tax. Camera alone goes for 6900€, first delivery will be probably beginning of March.

well.... I first planned to buy the camera in Germany this summer and claim the 16% tax back or wait until Jan. 2007 when the tax raises significantly and claim it back then.... But if the price you mention will be the current price for Germany in summer 2006, then I'll pass some nice days in Japan for the price difference I think and have some holiday with my wife there.

With the prices being quoted in Europe for the HVX, this camera is lined up to be a massive flop for all concerned. No one in their right mind would pay these over inflated prices, when we can all see what people in the USA are paying for basically the same product.

Have the European dealers got together and formed an illegal cartel? There seems no justification as to why Europeans have to pay one third more than their american brothers.

Disgusted.

waaay too much!! the res isn`t that much better in 1080, than in 720 and we won`t get 24p. i begin to think that jvc or canon might be better alternatives, considering price (jvc) or image (canon/hdsdi). the only real advantage are variable framerates.
i`ve waited so long for the hvx and every news is getting more and more disapointing.

a sad good bye
mas

It certainly looks like Panasonic Europe have priced the HVX way out of reach of the market they were aiming for. But what really pisses off customers is seeing what the Americans are paying for the same product.

I reckon B&H will be raking in a small fortune if they can offer the Pal version for the same prices as the NTSC. I will be front of the queue!

Wow, with the exchange rate, that's $8,349.68 for the camera alone...hope that guy was wrong. When your mark up is greater than a plane ticket to the States, you got serious problems.

some internet dealer "sells" it for 5'990 tax included.... no mention that 1) the camera can't be delivered yet and b) whether the price could change or not... so hopefully this very doubtful price gets reality - and if I think that I will get 16% on the 5'990 Euros back, then I might probably buy it in Germany:

http://www.mpec-gmbh.de/_detailpage/kameras/camcorder/1424/Panasonic_HVX-200+-vorl%E4ufig-.html

"Alle mit * gekennzeichneten Preise sind zzgl. 16% MwSt." It's the price without tax, so it would be 6,948 € or 8,433 USD for the camera alone.

At www.bhphotovideo.com I could buy it for 5,995.00 USD = 4,939.23 EUR
+ 30% Tax and import duty (shipping not included) = about 6420 €

6948 € vs. 6420 € makes 528 € (or 640 USD) difference

So it would be cheaper to fly over and buy the NTSC model. And i would have 60p instead of 50p. :undecided

According to the information I got from the dealer the price without tax (camera only) is 5990 € . So in any case you would have to shell out 6000€ just for the Camera. even if you get the tax back.
Furthermore he wrote, that "1080-50-25p is not a full resolution of 1920-1080 but
a 1440 -1080 like at the HDX 400 or the Sony HDCAM". So let's behave like real grown ups, wait for the camera, see real footage in PAL shot in the real world, compare
and then make an informed decicion.

Damn, that's a serious amount of money. :( Thanks for the info, Pete.

zzgl. = zuzüglich - ist ja klar!

I kind of read "inkl." .... but you're right and EVEN if the tax WAS included it would have been just at the limit for me, but 6,948 Euro is too much and I'm definitely NOT gonna buy the camera for that price. As I have to get it into an underwater-housing, I don't see an alternative unless..... the Z1 (please not... :embarasse )and you won't believe it: as the measurements of the HVX200 and the Z1 are almost the same, a German factory that produces a dozen of different housings just used the same for the HVX200 and the Z1 - it's just the electronics that change...

But before buying anything, I'll wait 'till summer if needed and observe the market and the HVX prices in the different countries that sell PAL-versions. I could save a lot of money, buying the Z1, but HDV is not that great for HD-broadcast... It would definitely be a temporary solution for the next 3 years until the market offers good HD-camcorders with the size of an HVX200 for 4000-6000 Euro (tax incl. ;) ) and a solid state recording system with a good codec.

Hello all in PAL land, my first post here on DVXuser......

Yes we definitely do pay a premium for our camera gear living outside the US...

Wait until B&H and stores in Singapore & Japan release the PAL model so we can see what sort of price we'll be paying for it....

I can handle & accept the P2 transition/limitations & expense, the non-interchangable lense & the delays in shipping this camera..... but the thing that reallys gets to me is not being able to switch between PAL/NTSC-24p/25p-50i/60i.... to me thats the biggest turn off for me..

Other than that, I believe the HVX is a great camera given the early reports.

Here's hoping a firmware update or modification will allow this feature to happen, like it is on the Canon XL-H1 & Sony Z1....

German dealers - keep your cams or try to find some uninformed customers!
I am definetely NOT buying in Germany! I am tired of getting ripped off.

Getting ripped off for electronics in Germany? Man, you buy something in Belgium. You guys get everything cheap if you compare.
This being said, taxes and profit margins in a country are always passed on. You have to pay more for your camera? Well, then normally you should ask more for a days work with your camera. And normally customers should pay it. I understand it saves money to shop abroad, but if it all ads up to a 500€ difference I'd rather buy at home. Because I have a good dealer here that will hand me a replacement camera if mine brakes down, etc, etc. Those are things you pay for aswell. Well, if you've got a good dealer that is. Otherwise you 'just' pay more. :)
But as long as everybody spends here and charges accordingly, I don't see the problem...

If it only were 500 Euros ... but it's probably going to be 2,000 or so, as always.
Besides: I haven't found any good dealer in Germany yet. Expensive ones, yeah!

the info i got from panasonic (their marketing department) was 5990 excl. VAT if I buy at the Austrian Panasonic importer in Vienna If you buy at another dealer than an official importer you have to pay his margin as well.

well.... I first planned to buy the camera in Germany this summer and claim the 16% tax back or wait until Jan. 2007 when the tax raises significantly and claim it back then....

I wouldn't worry too much about announced prices for Europe at this time: (a) the camera is still a couple of months out and a lot can happen until it actually does sell in quantities, (b) the market will react: if the announced prices are official Panasonic list prices, I'm pretty sure enterprising dealers in Europe will simply import HVX 200 Pal and/or NTSC camera from countries outside the E.U., add their margin and sell them at prices still considerably below list.

I, for one, don't plan on paying list prices but I'm not hopping on a plane to save a "little" money, either.

Oh, and one things more about the possibility of claiming a 19% VAT refund next year. I don't think that would work: Once the VAT has increased by 3 percentage points, prices will have adjusted accordingly. So there would be no additional benefit. And what about customs duties, if you bring a camera from Germany into Switzerland?

B&H sells for under 5,000 Euro. German dealers probably want at least 7,000 or even more.

So the "little" money that could be saved will probably be as "little" as 2,000 Euro (importing "grey") or 1,000 Euro (paying import tax). That is reason enough for me to hop.

It is the good old game: European customers always paid a lot more. But given the huge price difference, it may become worthwile to import the camcorder from the states again - as I did it nearly 20 years ago with my first Video8 camcorder.
