HVX-200 Europe

i've imported a DVX100 from New Zealand to Germany. it was 15% + VAT.
Different EU countries charge different duties and those different duties differ on different products! it's that simple! don't you know it's the work of governments taking our money to squander, of course it's that confusing.... plus Vat differs between EU countries.....

...and they mark-up 200% on top of the duties they have to pay. Import it yourself and you don t pay the markup.

Shai, if then it would have been 16% which ist the current VAT in Germany. and you have to pay import tax on top of it. the importtax depends on the good you buy. a camera is around 5% importtax, but a camcorder (a camera with DV in) is over 20% i think. If you buy from globalmediapro.com or such you might still have to pay importtax unless you get it from their UK branch.
Anyway if you buy abroad make sure you have chacked all costs that will come at you (cam, shipping, import, VAT).

there is hope for us pal 24p users.
found this at the panasonic broadcast forums:

"Hello there! I've read some *official* recent rumors, a good info for us! Panaso nic seems to want include 24p in Europe but without audio. I think it's important, because Varicam in Europe shot in 24p, and we all know that Panasonic wants to match this two different footage. So Panasonic I really like your ideas despite the problems that you have with oscillators! Remember to include the flipping image in camera, so we can use 35mm adapter as Micro35 and G35. If you can't include 24p, please include flipping image it's simple and gorgeous feature, I really hope we can help to you to make a great product, so listen your future customers Panasonic!"

let`s hope this is true.

just got word from an official Panasonic person: it comes in march. and the price of the cam will be 10.000 without VAT.
looks like they go with their initial plan of ONLY selling the bundle HVX + 8GB + 8GB. i think i might have to book a flight to NY soon.....

there have always been PAL versions available to buy in the USA... very naturally -- a little bit more expensive than the NTSC, but still ... nothing like the Euro horror prices.
but heck, im going to buy mine in germany, take a loan and distribute it for a year or two. it's better for tax, and the local service is a must, if one plans to make moeny out of this purchase.

alpi69, a camcorder should be 15% import taxes + 16% VAT. i payed exactly this amount, (hoping for the 5% version of the import taxes.. there is something like this) and magically came only 200 Euros cheaper than the local dealer price. the headach didnt worth it.

I think nothing has been confirmed officially yet about selling it with or without cards. Even though they are speaking of about 10.000 euros, it doesn't mean they are NOT selling it without cards. It's all speculation and I'm so tired of it, as we all are. We want a HVX without cards also, period. Panasonic, did you hear me?

I think import duty to Ireland which is EU is specifically on video cameras 4.9%...

Import duty on video cameras is 4.9% but import duty on VCRs is 14% (not 19% as I said earlier). As far as the EU is concerned this camera is be considered a VCR *if* it can record onto minidv via firewire or analogue inputs (which I presume it can).

That's the primary reason there's a price difference between the JVC GY-HD100 and JVC GY-HD101.

It's also the cause of much consternation amongs European video professionals and consumers alike.

I would suggest not to rush into conclusions about a product that's not released yet. Even if you heard something from a Panasonic official, it will almost certainly change when the camera is finally released. I called Panasonic Greece and they told me they don't have slightest clue as to what will happen, how much will it cost and so on. Because it's too early and they don't want to confuse customers!

It's simply absurd from Panasonic Europe to obligate its customers into buying the full package and I don't think it will happen, but even it does, Panasonic will suffer from low sales and alot of angry customers, which will then lead all local official dealers to sell the camera separately from the cards, if they don't do it from the begining anyway.

Cheers.

Hi,
No that's not exactly true based on definitions I've checked with revenue here. They have three loose definitions of television cameras which the hvx certainly fits with as its primary function. Whether or not they try to dump it into the VCR or 'other video cameras' category based on its sub-features / non-primary features - I think would be a case for appeal!
It is primarily a 3ccd television camera as specified in their 4.9% duty category. Obviously they don't update that category for every new camera that's coming out either with all the new specs and resolutions.
I have verified all of this through conversation with revenue official who agreed that the primary function is what counts - BUT that that does not mean the customs at airport wont charge me the 14% duty which I will then have to appeal....
like all customs and excise affairs, it needs to be tested in reality for true confirmation - so therefore I will you know how I get on when mine is delivered here in a few weeks. I certainly wont be a soft touch for their grubby robbing hands!

alex leith is otally right. a camera which has a video recorder capability, is right at the 15% criterion.

Import Duty Official Answer

Import Duty Official Answer

Dear Gentlemen:

Let me clarify the Import Duty issue regarding our Panasonic products in Europe:

Video Cameras has 4.9% Import Duty
VTR has 14% import Duty
Any camcorder with Video In: 14% import Duty

So all our cameras with IEEE-In or any other Video-In has the obligation to apply 14% import duty. If anybody applies 4.9%, at least be aware that Customs Authority can sue you due to illegal application.

Well Jaume,
It looks like you may be right due to past arrangements BUT perhaps I could counter sue them as their reason and excuse (legal application) for duty is to protect their EU market forces and an NTSC video recorder is not really in competition with EU models in the EU. Europeans will 99% purchase the PAL model. I on the other hand need the NTSC because I don't flock with the pseudo-Irishness buzz and live in the real world without sinister borders - and am making programs for NTSC broadcast with this camera.
My specific product is NTSC video camera recorder imported into a PAL zone so it cannot be justified by the Revenue in their usual way - which I think should and could be tackled and changed by a powerful company such as Panasonic if they were not scared to do so - the VTR excuse is a lame coverup for theft as it is only a sub-feature that will not be used much and does not relate to the high price of the camera due to broadcast quality recording.... I am currently seeking written confirmation from the revenue here on this issue (the theiving  b*****s).
p.s. Jaume as you've stated above correctly the VTR category is 14%, so customs are abusing this sub-feature to rate our HVX as a VTR! Check the legality of that will you?

so $ 5.500 is € 4.637 right now.
14% import duty makes it € 5286 before VAT. hmmmm.....I might go to New York soon.....ahhh let´s be crazy and go for express shipping instead. still only 5350.

When shopping for a dvx100B i stumbled across www.proav.co.uk, where it's sold for GBP 1695,- excluding 17,5% VAT. Also, they're expecting the hvx200 to go for anywhere between GBP 3500,- and 4000,-. Sounds alright, doesn't it? And on the phone they're friendly as your grandparents... Heard of evil ones though, so anyone know anything about this company...?
