HV20 macro focus any good?

I'm considering buying a HV20, but I do a lot of stop motion animation, in particular using Lego figures, so I need a good macro function. Just how close up can you get with a HV20?

If someone could post some screenshots or links to screenshots, that would be great - ideally shots of a ruler or other object of known measurements (e.g. a Lego figure), so that I can compare.

Thanks

Well I'll just mention that with an adapter/step up ring you can use close up lenses for still cameras to increase your magnification and focus much closer than you could without them. I use these with a 43>58mm step ring. http://www.adorama.com/MCCUS58.html?searchinfo=close up lens

You may even want to try something like this: http://www.adorama.com/MC10X49.html

Not the greatest optics on either of these but not bad either.

Why not use a DSLR or a normal digicam for stop motion? At the price of an HV20 an EOS will bring you amazing picture quality.

Good point SenorKaffee - "Corpse Bride" was shot with a handful of Canon digital SLRs. Can't remember which model, but they weren't as good as what you can get today for the same price.

I had considered a still camera instead, but I thought only some types of cameras could be used while connected 'live' to a computer - e.g. my cheap digital camera _won't_ work when connected. Is there a technical name for this ability?

An EOS400D with the EOS utility active you can save directly to the hard drive.

I never needed it because it can take over 800 JPEG images on maximum resolution on my 4GB CF card - about 30 seconds at 24fps. If you consider using an HV20 I don´t think you need RAW. ;)

ah, apparently this feature is called Remote Capture (by most manufacturers). If I was going to do nothing but stop motion animation, it would be a good option, but I think I'd like to keep the option to record video as well.

Tried a HV20 yesterday, and the macro seems fairly good, so think I'll proceed with buying one.
