HV20 Eject Tape Message

If this issue was mentioned elsewhere I do appologize. I am getting a message during recording or playback that I have to eject the tape and put it back in. I do this, but still get the red letters flashing with the message and beeping. I'm using JVC HD mini tapes. Is there a solution to this annoyance or could it be a faulty camera? Please advise.

Thanks!

Cleaning the tape heads may solve the problem.

I use the Panasonic "dry" type. Only run your cleaning tape for ten seconds at a time. Check after each 10 seconds to see if you're problem goes away.

Thanks for the tips. I tried this as you said for 10 seconds and no luck. I tried it for another 10 seconds and didn't work either. I don't feel I should do it again since doing it too often can make it worse.

I guess the only other option would be to use the warranty and get another one? I had a Sony DV Cam for 7 years... logged thousands of hours on it, made over 5 feature length movies, not 1 problem with it. Figured I would upgrade to some HD/24FPS and I can't even get by a couple months. Just frustrating.

I had the same issue with my HV 20 and I have only clocked about 8 hours on it so far. Mine didn't even accept the tape anymore and a red eject tape icon kept flashing with 5 beeps. I called Canon UK Support and they suggested me to try head cleaning tape which obviously didn't work because it didn't acept the tape in the first place. Then they advised me to s end the unit off to them. I am waiting to get it back. I am very disappointed with it.

Bumping this up.

My GL2 is doing the same thing. I get a red message "remove the cassette."

Any of you guys find the solution/repair?

Did you try cleaning the heads? Some old canon eluras used to give this error a lot and I remember some people were using blow dryer to solve their problems. I am not sure if it works or not.

Since posting that, I've done a bunch of reading. Sounds like moisture is just one of the problems that could be causing it.

I called canon and got the 'well it's not a known problem' bs, even though there's a notice on their website about it.

As far as cleaning it goes, I can't use the head cleaner I've got because it's a cassette and I can't do anything with a cassette. No play, no record, no FF, no Rewind......

I find it hard to believe it's just a dirty head regardless. There have been WAY too many people with this problem.

I'll try the blow dryer trick, then it's back to canon monday if the problem persists.

Need an excuse to buy a dvx anyway......

Also, if you didn't already, reset the camcorder from the reset button. Maybe it will help. The button is located in the battery cavity.

I thought about that and went hunting for one. It's neither behind the main battery nor the watch battery.

Is it under the serial number label in the main battery port?

if you look at that serial number sticker, you will see it says reset. Right under it there is a small button that you can push with the help of a pencil. Well, do it.

You caught the part about this being a GL2 right?

It's not there. I promise. The serial number label just has the number, a bar code and some extremely useful diagram about how to attach the battery.

I know I'm in the wrong forum but this thread is what came up searching for that message. Seems a widespread canon thing for a certain period of manufacture regardless of model.

I totally missed that part. I thought you were having the same problems with an HV20. The trick to reset the camcorder is to remove the backup battery. Since HV20 has an inbuilt backup battery they put a reset button. For GL2, open the LCD screen. You will see the small cover for the backup battery. Remove it and wait for about 20-30 seconds, put it back. You are done.

Tried the blow dryer and the battery removal. Neither worked so I sent it to canon. An emailed estimate claimed $57 in unspecified repairs...so whatever it is, I guess it only took about 2 minutes to fix. Nothing was listed as replacements, just 'labor'. I'll update when I get the thing back in hand.

Just figured I'd post that in case anyone else is dealing with the same problem.

did you ever get the HV20 back??
I'm having the same problem and it happens with one tape that was brand new!!! i have no idea what's going on... the tape was fine, but the camera seems to have messed it up. other tapes playback which is weird. REAL Weird.

Hopefully the repairs under the 60 day warranty can solve this situation....

let me know if the repair helpped!?
