HV20 and 720P?

I know with the DVX200 you have the option to choose from 720P, 1080P, and 1080i HD recording. What are the recording options on the HV20? Is the only option 1080i? If not, is the 720P a better choice for a non-interlaced, clearer image?

PAL HV20 recording formats -
1080p25
1080i50
576i50
576p25 - by way of down-conversion in camera

NTSC HV20 recording formats -
1080p24
1080i60
480i60
480p24 - by way of down-conversion in camera

and i think technically if you shoot 1080i60 and down-convert to 480i60 you actually get 480p30 so you can ad that to the list as well... but i'm not sure coz i'm in PAL land

No, 1080i60 downconverted will be 480i60. It doesn't become 30P.

Referencing the OP's question: the Canon HDV lineup doesn't do 720p at all, not in acquisition, not in recording, not in playback.

So if anyone would want 720/60P they should shoot 1080/60i and convert in post.

In theory that would make 1920*1080i = 1920*540P = 1280*540P

of course in practise it would be even lower.

Well, yeah, basically, but it wouldn't start at 1920x1080, it'd start at 1440x1080. Not that it'd matter. But yes, you cannot create 720p on a Canon or Sony HDV product, JVC is the only manufacturer that offers 720p in HDV. If you're using one of the other brands you'd have to do some manner of post conversion.

Are you sure it is possible to get 576/25p or 480/24p with down conversion using DV lock? The camera only outputs 50i or 60i using DV lock. Can you obtain the original progressive recording or will it be a conversion from interlaced to progressive in post production? I wonder if the pulldown still remains after the downconversion or for the pal version NLE should see it as 25p after the capture without doing anything. Is it like that?

miniDV doesnt have progressive scan. So the 25P is embedded in the 50i signal. But thats easy to fix in post. I have done it all the time with my DVX.
