HV-20 Mic recommendations?

We have a new HV-20 but starting to realize a shotgun mic is in order.

Plugged our Sennheiser MKE-300 with fresh battery into the HV-20 mic input last night... Even cranking the HV-20 external mic input gain, we couldn't get the MKE-300 to feed enough signal to clear the inherent noise floor of the camera.

Any suggestions beyond the Canon DM-50?

Thanks

I'm using an Audio Technics AT897.

I've had the same problem, and I think others have as well.

Thanks one and all for these excellent recommendations. I must confess however that my troubles with the Sennheiser MKE-300 were the result of operator error.

Ack! The camera has a special built in attunation setting. Turn that off and the mic works just fine. Seems I was padding it into the noise floor.

For all others, check the mic attenation setting if you're experiencing our similar trouble. Looks like we'll stick with the Sennheiser for now, but the AT897 and AKG Blue line, look really sweet... Its really not absurd to think a mic should cost as much as the camera. They're both doing equal work recording different spectrums of energy, but for now, the cheapie will do! :)

Hey Guys!

I'm considering purchasing the AT897 for my HV20. What else will I need? What kind of boom pole? Will I need the BeachTek DXA-2s? I will be making indie films.

Pick up an AT8341 XLR adapter cable to go with your AT897. At less than $20, it's a cheap XLR mic solution.

That's great for on-camera. But if you want to mount your AT897 on a boom pole you'll definitely want BALANCED connections (XLR on both ends). Get the BeachTek for that. Rode makes a nice (and cheap) boom pole: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/392860-REG/Rode_BOOMPOLE_BOOMPOLE_f_NTG_1_NTG_2_VIDEOMIC.html

You'll also need a shock mount: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=300643&is=REG
And a wind screen: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/267890-REG/Rycote_033042_14cm_Medium_Hole_Softie.html

Man... looks like you are trying to compensate for some shortcomings there... Heheh... Couldn't resist.... and Good Lord that's a big mike for such a little cam...

Has anyone tried Canon's DM-50 Directional Stereo Mic. It uses the HV20's "Hot" shoe for cordless operation. How does this mic perform?
