Hummingbirds in Slow Motion

I don't see the 120 fps feature as listed in the specs of the LX7 at BHPhoto.

Just 60 fps.

Has there been a firmware update?

It's listed in the specifications. It says "[Hi Speed Video] 1280 x 720 pixels, 30fps (MP4) (Sensor Output is 120fps)"; last entry in the "motion picture recording" section.

ragnar, that's some gorgeous stuff.

Did you edit it on a 30p timeline? Because if so, you could make the footage a little bit more slow-mo by editing on a 24p timeline, and playing the footage back at 80% speed. It gets recorded as 30p, but if you played it at 24p, it'd be just that little bit extra slow-mo, it'd be 5:1 slow-mo instead of 4:1.

Nice beautiful stuff!

Thanks, Barry, for that 120fps 30p into a 24p timeline tip. I'll write that down and try it for my next 120fps experiment. Glad that you enjoyed the hummingbirds. They are amazing little creatures. Also, do you know why I can't hit Enter on my keyboard while doing this post. I hit Enter on my keyboard but it doesn't do anything. Harold House.

I have the same problem on my PC. The enter key does not start a new line. On my Mac, it works ok.

Very nice,, the new ZS30/TZ40 does 120 fps also, I wonder how it compares to the LX7 quality

The Panasonic ZS30 holds up very well in image quality, as long as you have decent lighting, like in these hummingbird videos. The sensor on the LX7 is larger, and the zoom lens is only 3.8x optical, but is much faster in speed: max f/1.4 at full wide.

In contrast, the ZS30 has a 20x optical zoom that is significantly slower, together with a slightly smaller sensor. But also has a newer and improved image stabilization than the LX7.

So for low light shooting, the LX7 has a definite edge. But for zoom range and better image stabilization, the ZS30 clearly holds the edge.

Here is a link to the Vimeo page of a Panasonic ZS30 owner who has been traveling all around the world with his camera, taking some really beautiful footage, all handheld!

Here is a cool comparision test he did comparing the popular and highly regarded Sony Hx9v to the Panasonic ZS30. The Sony footage is first, followed by the Panasonic. There is just NO COMPARISON! The Panasonic footage is STUNNING compared to the Sony. NOTE: Be sure to view the footage in full screen mode in order to be able to better appreciate the difference in quality.

And checkout the rest of his ZS30 videos on his Vimeo channel. They are most impressive.

Note: The owner rating at B&H Photo's website for the LX7 is an impressive 4.7 out of 5. But their owner rating for the ZS30 is almost as good: 4.6 out of 5!

So much is said by many people about how great the Sony RX-100 is. Yet both the Panasonic ZS30 and LX7 get customer feedback scores that are just as high as the Sony, and even higher in the case of the LX7. And both Panasonic cameras are FAR MORE AFFORDABLE too!!

Thanks Lance for the link. Great comparison. I considered the HX9v video quality excellent and it looks like the ZS30 does better.

Thanks for posting this great footage. I've had an LX7 for a month now and haven't even tried 120fps yet.

On the LX7, Lance, my understanding is that the camera turns off image stabilization when high speed mode (120fps) is used. I'm guessing the same thing happens with the ZS30.

I love the wide fast lens on this cam. The LX7 is practically a camcorder replacement. I'm just not impressed with its stills but of course I'm comparing it with the Fuji X100.

Yes, I am sure that is indeed the case. I was speaking more in general terms of describing how the ZS30 differs from the LX7. They are both very similar in price, but offer a much different set of features.

Checkout some of Mark Rosenzweig's other videos on his Vimeo channel. He shot all of them handheld.

I like Markr041's vids but haven't found that he has used High Speed Mode on his ZS30 yet. I have the LX7 but want the longer zoom on the zs30.
One note. Besides no image stabilization the LX7's exposure is locked once you start recording in high speed mode. Would be nice if this wasn't the case with the zs30.
