F3: "Hulkanizing" with 3ality Body Armor...

Absolutely on both counts. Thanks Mitch.

I might note that AbelCine and Element Technica have had an excellent and fruitful relationship for years now. We continued to enjoy this relationship while they were a part of 3ality and we fully expect to continue along with them as a part of RED. The Micron line of accessories for cameras such as the F55, C300 and more are great designs which have been embraced by our clients.

This is still active. As a manufacturer we move to where the business is. Typically this follows the sales cycle of professional or pro-sumer cameras. The F3 for us is no longer a feasible camera to support, same as the RED One. So instead of making a few hundred products that will sit on our shelves for years, we sell until they are gone.

Are any other accessories to the F3 body armor also available with the F3SALE discount code, such as EVF attachments to the manhandle, baseplates, etc.?

Looks like the baseplate and riser w/ shoulder pad sold out a few days ago. Got mine yesterday along with the armor kit. I have to get some machining done to attach my ProVFM stuff but it will be worth it. The baseplate w/ shoulder pad is just knockout amazing. Industrial design at it's finest.

All are still available separately but no longer as a kit. BTW, anything we don't have you may still be able to get from any of our resellers.

One of my biggest concerns about hulkanizing was getting headphone audio out of the camera. Glad to concur with Stephen that the audio coming out of the phono jack outputs right underneath the XLR inputs delivers audio at the right level. It is line level but if you drive your headphones with either the Sony MDR-7506 or the Sennheiser HD25-mkII, your levels will be pretty much the same as how you would have the audio levels set up for the headphone jack. Huge relief for me.

I bought two Y-cables from B&H (one as a spare). Nice and short.

Element's base plate is magnificent as much as body armor... I have it still on my shelf, just looking at it! I was able to get VCT kit and with little mod, pair it with my Sony quick release plate. All together, beauty of industrial design. I am still waiting for the last part from Elelment to put it all together and then retire my TrusMT plate (that is good but not even close to slickness and finish of Elelment)...

Hi there Grug. I actually work for Element Technica so I will help you guys with some of the questions that have been posed here along with suggestions as needed. When we originally designed the ManHandle we actually needed to make sure it cleared any screens that would get in the way. When designing it the first camera we were testing it with was the FS700. This meant we had to be mindful of the height of the flip up screen. All other testing we have done on other cameras proved to be the right choice especially considering we wanted to keep the 15mm clamp integrated into the design. This means a tube clamp wouldn't be needed. Yay. Well, as you've noticed, there are situations where the height is needed nor is the extra 15mm clamp. So next in our arsenal is going to be a reduced height handle riser to take care of just such issues.

Hi Joey,

The 15mm clamp built into the top section of the handle is brilliant, just brilliant, there's no other word for it. Personally I think it's an idea which should become an industry standard (because it allows for really elegant mounting solutions that take up no additional space on top of the camera - see the photos I posted of my PIX240 mounted that way). I don't think I'll ever buy another top handle without this feature built in.

The 15mm clamp built in to the handle riser is also a great addition for some things, but personally I'd happily sacrifice it for a lower profile handle that takes up less space, it needs to be at least an inch lower IMO (though perhaps a smaller kipping lever would make it possible to keep the riser-based clamp whilst still lowering the height of the riser?).

At any rate, I'm delighted with the kit so far. Put me down for the reduced height handle riser - I'll take the first one off the line!

Cheers

Grug, i seem to recall your having offered some details about the parts used to mount your pix before, but i can't find it. i see the "cross clamp" on the Berkey site, but is the rest of it just a combination of rods and blocks?

i ask because i've been meaning to invest in the Solid evf mount for my Alphatron but your method looks like it should provide an equally versatile set up (if not quite as slick) for a lot less money. also, it's been mentioned that the Solid doesn't get the evf close enough to the camera.

It's a solution I came up with from looking at the functionality people were wanting to get with dedicated units like the Solid Camera mount, and wondering how close I could get to it with the various Berkey System parts I had (which in my experience to date, I've been able to create just about anything with).

Basically the cross clamp sits on top of the top plate with the clamps orientated along the front/back axis (with the ET Manhandle, the handle itself provides this mounting point) then you simply use two Berkey System Adjustable Handle Mounting Rods, one running forward out of the cross clamp, and the second mounted into first so that you have a 15mm clamp available to the operator side of the camera (or the assistant side, or the top - you can position it anywhere you like by moving the rod that is held in the cross clamp.

So the cross clamp (or the Manhandle) and the two handle mounting rods give you your mounting point for your PIX, monitor or EVF, the next step is to get a small section of 15mm rod protruding from the rear of your PIX/monitor/EVF. The Berkey System PIX Mounting Rod does this perfectly for the PIX, but you can get the same functionality by attaching either the EVF Mount for RED Bomb, or the Flying Mini Cheese plate to the side/top/bottom of whatever EVF/Monitor you own.

This setup give you full adjustability for the position and angle of your PIX/EVF/Monitor along almost every axis, and everything is extremely solid and locks down securely (plus it's cheap!).

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Joey,

Question about connecting the bottom of the riser baseplate/shoulder pad kit to other devices like bridge plates and so on...

When I purchased the kit, I was led to believe you could connect it directly to ARRI dovetails. I think there was a communication gap as it doesn't appear to be possible. There are 4 3/8"- 16 holes for bridgeplate connectivity. This is great, however, before I go looking elsewhere do you have a device other than a full bridge plate system that was act as an interface between an ARRI sytle dovetail and the shoulder/baseplate unit?

You need the bridge in order to have studio rods align at the correct height and spacing to the lens. The riser will connect directly to either an Element Technica or ARRI bridge, or to any number of compatible bridges. If you do not need studio rods, then at AbelCine we do have other inbetween pieces which are less expensive and lower in size & weight.

Excellent news Mitch. What I am looking for is an intermediary device so I can move from a shoulder rig to Steadicam with the least hassle and weight is an essential consideration. Using a dovetail will allow me to achieve rig balance quickly among other things. I will send you an email. Thanks for your input.

Here is my current F3 setup for 90% of my shoots and I'm very happy with things. I detach the mic for most shoots as now have a boom operator with me.

OMG. You must be the most patient man in the world. That thing has more going on than a NASA launch.

You'll have to add a preston rig someday and we'll hear you explode all the way in California!

Ah Nate. Don't give him a hard time. Looks good overall. The mic behind the XLR plug isn't good and a few wild cables need to be tamed, but he's getting there. No one has had the body armor for long yet.

@Nate- Whats the name of that Panavision 35mm tube camera in your avatar again? I remember reading an old article about it.

Tata, which part are you waiting on?

So you may be getting your wish sooner then you think, on both counts ;)
