HPX500A: Maybe?

I kind of find it funny that the EX1 one is always mention as this magic mini F900 at cine events, while no one mentions the HPX 500 as "Varicam's little sister"

Just a thought.

How sweet would an HPX 500 be with a RR micro matte box!!! :)

That's because the HVX200 is the mini-Varicam already. :B Just playin' both sides here.

I really don't think the EX-1 or 3 has the HPX500 beat on all sides. In fact, I'd wager it only has it beat on one and that's Price. If the HPX500 with a lens was the same price as the EX-3 with a lens there wouldn't really be any sort of "thinking" about it.

Sadly, The HPX500 is still an expense greater than that of the EX-3 so consideration must be taken.

They're all good, though! And that includes the 200A. Just gotta figure out what you want, what you don't want, those sorts of things.

Exactly. That's also how i see it.

I said a lot of sides not all sides.

Anyway I just thought of something ( Jan get get your paper and pencil out)

DSR 500 - DSR 300 - DSR PD 170
HPX 500 HPX 3?? - HPX 170

Eh uh Yeah. A 1/2 inch shoulder mount P2 hd camcorder!!! With a competative price to the EX3. So either standard 1/2 bayonet mount or some fixed lens. Either way you should be able to walk out the door and shoot for under 10k. May be even a real hd chip or even full raster. I mean I know it hurts sales on the other cams but hey sony has full raster in their cams. Or it could be in a smaller from factor something like a cross between the jvc HD 100 and an HVX 200 with the 1/2 inch mount on the front. That way it wouldn't compete so much with the bigger guys.

So there you have it the HPX 300

Any way ,panasonic, that ones free ;)

So I still can't decide. I don't know if I can live with the 1 inch veiwfinder either, so more cash to the fire.

I see a $2,000 rebate on the 500. Is this because an upgrade is coming? Aside from the better s/n in the 200a, what are the other upgrades?

What do you intend to use the camera for? I mean are you operating a business? Quite simply some people I shoot for prefer xdcam, I dont have one - rental. If someone wanted a RED - rental (have a guy hiring close by). Having the HPX as a general use cam for me just means I have it all the time and can shoot whatever I want, when I want outside business use.

If your buying the cam for personal projects only or to learn then the 170 would be the best bet IMO, get a second hand A1 etc. Whatever cam isnt going to make a huge difference to your end production.

Ive heard from a very qualified source that the rebate has nothing to do with a new model - its an incentive to get the camera in more peoples hands.

... also ...
MUCH lower noise
Better resistance to vertical smear
Better processing on the LCD makes the image a lot easier to focus and looks sharper

Barry, although I can attest for all other improvements, and they're all very welcome, I didn't find the image on the LCD or VF different at all.
Very sharp focus is still delicate on the 200a.
IMHO

Side by side, with peaking on, I found the 200A to be noticeably easier to focus than the 200. But not nearly as improved as the 170.

I have the feeling "improved lcd" means improved because of more focus assist options not because the image is sharper/clearer/higher res.

The LCD appears to be the same. But the image that's displayed on it is significantly sharper on the 170 than the 200. And the 200A sits somewhere inbetween.

That is good news barry but do you understand how they did it?
Is it other type of LCD with the same resolution as the 200?
